The Province of Munster region

Killarney has formidable advantages as a tourist center. Foremost is the extraordinary beauty of the surroundings, and the great variety of places to see, secondly, it is very central, a fifty mile radius of Killarney comprises of all Kerry and west Cork, and there is a dozen memorable forays which can be made, apart from the more local runs. There is no other center so well equipped for exploring those places, amongst the most beautiful in Ireland. Thirdly, there is a bustling night life with live music in many of the pubs and numerous restaurants of various standards and prices. Killarney has a traditional skill and charm in coping with the tourist that few places posses. Fourthly, the weather is more strongly varied than any other location in the south west, and flexibility by the tourist can enable him to turn this to their advantage. What make the Killarney area exceptional is the richness of the gifts which it has been endowed. there are four main ingredients, each contributing to the others. There is the geology - the strangely shaped and jumbled mountains, the water - in lakes, streams and cascades, the light continually changing and the vegetation lush and colorful and the fauna including the native red deer and the recently introduced sea eagles. Queen Victoria holidayed in Killarney in 1861 and since then many famous poets and writers have written verse about Killarney's lakes mountains and the surrounding area.

All the above have contributed to making the Killarney area the tourist capital of Ireland.
