The Botanical Ark Retreat offers exclusive Daintree accommodation in your own private, peaceful family villa set within the globally unique rainforest conservation garden of The Botanical Ark. This secluded property borders the Daintree National Park, is within 35-minutes of the Daintree River and Port Douglas, gateway to the Great Barrier Reef.

The Botanical Ark is one of the world's greatest collections of tropical ethnobotanical plants (plants humans can use), growing more than 3,000 species of tropical plants, including fruit, spices and nuts.

It is the lifework of Alan and Susan Carle. Read their remarkable and inspiring stories, including how and why The Botanical Ark is helping save the world's rainforests. It's not surprising this ethnobotanical conservation showcase has made many appearances in the media, received accolades from Slow Food, plus other awards.

The Botanical Ark is closed to the public so guests at The Botanical Ark Retreat have exclusive use, privacy is guaranteed, and your identity remains confidential.

It can be self-catering accommodation, or you can request a master chef to prepare one or more meals in our gourmet kitchen.

How The Botanical Ark is helping save tropical rainforests of the world will be revealed in depth if you do the Botanical Ark Garden Tour during your stay. There are also other activities at The Botanical Ark.

We are conveniently located for visits to the regions iconic destinations, including the world heritage Great Barrier Reef, Daintree National Park, the Daintree River, Mossman Gorge, Cape Tribulation, plus Port Douglas. So there is always plenty of things to do. Getting here is easy as the Cairns International Airport is only a 90 minute drive away.

With their children grownup and gone, Alan and Susan live in a separate home in another private location on The Botanical Ark property. If they are on site, they welcome a chat over a Botanical Ark tropical fruit-juice if you would like to do that. And because they fund this globally unique rainforest refuge out of their own pocket, some say staying here is like saving tropical rainforests of the world in your sleep.

About this location

The Queensland region

The Daintree region is a world heritage listed area. In fact, it is two world heritage listed areas; the Daintree National Park and the Great Barrier Reef. That's why we say it's where the forest meets the reef. On the reef, you'll find world-renowned dive sites, fantastic snorkeling locations, and plenty of tours to the reef every day. On the Daintree River is where you'll find crocodile spotting and bird watching tours. The Daintree National Park offers some fantastic walks, mostly short, but there's a couple of all-day hikes, too, that meander through this oldest stretch of rainforest on Earth.

We are in the tropics so expect tropical conditions. The winter months, May - October, are gloriously warm with nights chilly enough to sleep under blankets. Summer is hotter and humid. Most of the rain falls over the summer. At The Botanical Ark Retreat, most of the 3000 species of ethnobotanical trees and flowers and fruiting and flowering over the summer.
