The Cumbria/Lake District
The Lake District village of Threlkeld is a walker's paradise being located on the slopes of Blencathra. The village is also close to Skiddaw and the Helvellyn range and a short drive delivers you to the Borrowdale fells and the Central Lake District fells.
Blencathra is literally on the doorstep of Bencathra (see the photo above!). One of the main walking routes up this incredible mountain runs directly behind the property so pack your lunch, pull on your boots and begin the walk (and leave the car at home!).
You can also head up Skiddaw by either walking along the old railway track then up Latrigg and on to Skiddaw OR walk up Blease Road, round Blencathra to the back of Skiddaw and up to the summit - A quieter more stunning walking experience.
Not all the walking from Ling Close is quite as extreme. Heading on to the old railway line to Keswick is a beautiful four mile flat walk which follows the meandering river to the Keswick hotel. You can picnic beside the river bank and enjoy the tranquility of the Lakeland scenery.
We can't forget the mountain bikers on this page. One of the great Lakeland rides is round Skiddaw. Start from Ling Close and head up Blease Road. Go around the side of Blencathra to the back of Skiddaw. Head down to Bassenthwaite and continue past Dodd Wood. Finally go up Latrigg and down the shallow side back to Threlkeld. Fantastic.
Keswick / Threlkeld area
Threlkeld village in Cumbria is an ideal base to explore the Lake District. Situated only four miles East of Keswick and twelve miles West of Penrith, Threlkeld is surrounded by some of the most spectacular panoramic Lakeland scenery.
Keswick is a famous historic market town and attracts many visitors throughout the year due to the stunning locality, the nearby lake Derwentwater and the range of events - the Keswick Jazz and Beer Festivals, productions at the famous Theatre by the Lake, the sporting activities. There is also good shopping, a variety of cafes, bars, restaurants and clubs, a cinema, museum and leisure centre.
For the sporting enthusiast, Threlkeld and area is ideal. Apart from the fell walking (and running!) there are some of Britain's best climbing routes, mountain bike trails, paragliding schools and windsurfing. Threlkeld is also the home to the mountain golf course - Threlkeld Hall (Keswick Golf Club) - a challenging 18 hole par 72 course.
The Northern Lake District has a fascinating history. Between Threlkeld and Keswick sits the mysterious and ancient Castlerigg Stone Circle believed to be connected with the Druids. The modern day pencil was invented in Keswick and is still made by the Rexel factory where you can visit the Pencil museum. The local mining roots are reflected in the mining museum at the other side of Threlkeld valley.
How to get there
Leave the M6 at junction 40 at Penrith, then join the A66 to Keswick. After approximately 10 miles, turn right into Threlkeld Village. Go through the village and turn right into Blease Road, then turn immediately right along the lane. Lingclose Village is at the end of the lane, approx. 100 yards.
