Farmhouse | 5 bedrooms | sleeps 9
This traditional Lakeland farmhouse sits nestled on the southern slopes of Blencathra in a quiet rural setting just outside the village of Threlkeld. The location in the heart of the Lake District National Park is ideal for keen walkers and cyclists, though the property also makes an excellent base for those who wish to simply relax and enjoy the stunning views and local wildlife. Lambs graze in the field behind Ings and the large south facing garden is frequented by red squirrels and a wide variety of bird life. The property is reached up a tree lined track through a five-barred gate from the lane.
Ings was originally refurbished from a 17th century farm house and adjoining barn by the actor and Oscar winning director Colin Welland (Z-Cars, Kes, Chariots of Fire). Whilst thoroughly modernising the property, he retained many of the traditional features and Ings is now a cosy farmhouse with stone floors, wooden shutters and an open fire and wood burning stove. The property is an ideal holiday destination for a large or extended family, though has been very succesfully let to two families wishing to holiday together or several couples. The accomodation is particularly spacious, with two lounges (upstairs and downstairs) - ideal for families with children.of different ages or where there are differences in film choices for the evening!
The views are spectacular! To the rear of the property the land rises steeply to the summit of Blencathra. To the front, the large south-facing garden has picnic tables and sweeping views down over St Johns in the Vale; the summit of Helvellyn can be seen on a clear day. Wildlife abounds - a small investment in food for the birds and red squirrels reaps great rewards.
The location is excellent, lying just to the west of the village of Threlkeld, which boasts two popular pubs (The Horse and Farrier and The Salutation), both of which are within easy walking distance of the property. The shops, restaurants, theatre, cinema and other amenities of Keswick are only 4 miles away; journey time is just over 10 minutes by car, though an attractive alternative is the cycle ride or walk along the picturesque Greta Gorge (the former Penrith to Keswick railway line). This flat easy path is entirely safe and traffic free, criss-crossing the river over the old railway bridges with multiple opportunites for picnicing and bathing. Within a 20-30 minute car journey lie the western fells, Ullswater and Grasmere/Ambleside, with all of their attractions.
As owners we have visited the Lake District for many decades and have excellent knowlege of the best places to eat, where to obtain instruction for outdoor pursuits including mountain biking, sailing, kayaking and ghyll scrambling - our comprehensive guide for guests within the property has been praised for its detail and utility.
Serious walkers will appreciate Ing's prime location. There is direct access onto public footpaths from the house with access to Blencathra, Skiddaw and other northern fells as well as multiple gentle strolls into Threlkeld or in the opposite direction to the hamlet of Wescoe (WH Auden lived and wrote here). There are plenty of opportunities for mountain bikers in the immediate locality, including the Glendaraterra Valley leading to the back of Skiddaw, and the Old Coach Road. The singletrack routes of the trail centre at Whinatter forest are reached by a short car journey. Road cyclists fancying a quick workout before breakfast can cycle up to Castlerigg stone circle and enjoy the panoramic views before putting the bacon on! Ings lies virtually directly on the Coast to Cost cycle route.
A large upstairs lounge with balcony and wood burning stove takes full advantage of the views on both sides and will easily accommodate all nine of the guests. TV, DVD and video player, extensive book library (adult and children's) and games for all ages. Wood burning stove. Double doors leading to large balcony with wonderful views of the summit of Blencathra.
For parties with children it can be nice to take advantage of the second lounge downstairs for film or games nights. A wide range of games and films and quite a collection of dressing up clothes are available for our younger guests. Downstairs lounge has open fire, TV and DVD player. Access to south facing garden via exterior door.

The Cumbria/Lake District
The Lake District is Englands largest National Park and one of the countries foremost tourist destinations. It is famous for its scenic mountains (England's highest), lakes and forests, which inspired the 19th century Lakeland poets, including William Wordsworth. Whilst the region is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts, with some of the countries finest walks and cycle routes, there is much to do for the less energetic. Literary sights abound, from Wordsworth's boyhood school to the lavish country estate of John Ruskin at Brantwood.
Food is taken seriously here. There are a total of three Michelin starred restaurants within the Lake District as well as a multitude of other excellent restaurants and pubs. The guide for guests at Ings contains a number of our personal recommendations,
Threlkeld has two well known pubs - the Horse and Farrier being the closest and The Salutation at the other end of the village. There is excellent local shopping in Keswick together with theatre, cinema and lake cruises. Keswick Golf Club is less than a mile away and welcomes visitors.
