The Cumbria/Lake District
On and around the Lakes
Keswick is a short drive from Derwentwater House, a 20 minute walk or a quick ride on the launch.
Keswick is packed with shops, boutiques, pubs, cafes and restaurants. It's a short walk to the Theatre by the Lake and banks of Derwentwater, just south of the town. Or carry on around the lake on the launch – a 50 minute cruise. There are seven landing stages for you to explore the lakeside.
Keswick is the UK's Adventure Capital – and the North Lakes are well known for their breathtaking views and fantastic outdoor activities – from the gentle to the extreme. Don't miss Ashness Bridge, an excellent example of a packhorse bridge, with one of the Lake District's most famous views looking north to Derwentwater, Whinlatter and Skiddaw.
It's on the way to Honister Slate Mine, where you can test your climbing skills on the Via Ferrata. Climb to the top of Fleetwith Pike, safely attached to a steel cable so almost anyone can enjoy this.
You can do some wonderful walks straight from the house. Jump in the car and head off on the most scenic tours you can imagine. Go mountain biking in Whinlatter forest. Or make the most of being lake side and get out on the water. Kayaking, sailing and canoeing are all available from the marina a few hundred yards from the house and are the perfect way to enjoy the Lake District
Just a few hundred yards from the house is Derwentwater Marina. From their moorings you can go sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, kayaking, ghyll scrambling, rock climbing and raft-building sessions. There are also canoes, kayaks, sailing dinghies, windsurfers and rowing boats for hire. The lake is just waiting to be explored.
Canyoning, Ghyll Scrambling, White Water Tubing and Water Rollerz are just a few of the activities on offer from Keswick Adventure Centre.
Or head to the Keswick Climbing and Activity Centre. A dedicated indoor climbing wall in the Lake District catering for all ages and abilities. A wide range of things to do from indoor climbing and archery and a wide range of outdoor activities.
For younger children the Lake District Wildlife Park is home to hundreds of friendly animals including traditional favourites, endangered species, birds of prey and reptiles. A great day out.
For the Grown Ups
Theatre by the Lake in Keswick is Cumbria's only year-round producing theatre, described by The Independent as “the most beautifully located and friendly theatre in Britain.”
Enjoy a day touring the Jennings Brewery. Jennings regards itself as a traditional brewer, traditional in a number of different ways. Pure Lakeland water is still used for brewing, drawn from the brewery's own well, and only the finest natural ingredients are added, including English pale ale malt.
At the beautiful heart of the English Lake District, Keswick Golf Club offers a unique golfing experience, with breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Lakeland Fells, including Blencathra, Skiddaw and the Helvellyn Range.
If you would like to indulge in some beauty and health treatments there is world class spa and pampering at the Armathwaite Spa, a 10 minute drive away.
