The Lake District is an area of mountains and lakes in the north west of England. It is a heavily glaciated geological dome, with radiating drainage. It is the largest national park in the United Kingdom, covering 2,280 sq kms and containing the full variety of ecosystem components within the area. It has long been valued for its natural beauty and appreciated as a superlative example of man's harmonious interaction with his natural environment.
It has exerted a profound influence over the artistic appreciation of the beauties of nature, inspiring Wordsworth and the Lake Pocts as well as many of Britain's finest landscape painters. It has also played an internationally important part in other areas endeavour, especially the understanding of geological processes and the development of rock climbing.
The Keswick / Portinscale area
Keswick on Derwentwater and the Northern Lakes covers one half of the Lake District National Park. This is the perfect area to choose equally for gentle relaxation or for an action packed family adventure holiday with lots of things to do.
Portinscale
Portinscale is a 1 mile pleasant stroll from Keswick. The village includes a friendly pub serving local ales and an excellent selection of fine food, both at lunchtime and in the evening. There is also a village tearoom and small general store which can provide the basic essentials. The village boasts two marinas where sailing, windsurfing and canoeing are offered, either for instruction or hire. There is a jetty at Nichol End marina from where you can step aboard the motor launch that circuits the lake both ways and makes stops at points around and including the main town of Keswick.
