About the home
Bowderbeck is tastefully decorated and full of character with original features including exposed beams and stone floors.

There is also a Youth Hostel and a small church, St James' which is famous for the memorial to Alfred Wainwright as you can see his favourite mountain 'Haystacks' from the church window. Its also an easy 10 minute walk down to a shingle beach on Buttermere lake where you can swim in the summer and skim stones and marvel at the views all year.

Further details indoors:
There is a fully equipped kitchen, a comfortable living room, separate dining room and a wooden verandah extension with a large west-facing balcony with panoramic views of the valley, which is a wonderful place to sit out in the summer with a pre-dinner drink to watch the sun go down!! There are four bedrooms; one double, one twin and a single upstairs; and bunk beds in the verandah.
The living room is comfortable and spacious, with a lovely view down to the lake from the window. There is no TV as there's no reception because of the mountains, but there are plenty of books, playing cards and a whole cupboard of board games and jigsaws to keep you occupied! There is a separate dining room which can seat up to eight people.
The modern kitchen is fully equipped kitchen with electric oven & separate hob, microwave, fridge and dishwasher. The back door leads from the kitchen into a small porch then out to the garden. There is a separate, large utility room / pantry with a freezer, washing machine, ironing board & iron.
The verandah is a wooden extension that was added to the house in the 1930's. Accessed through a door off the living room, it consists of two rooms with a door leading onto a large balcony and to the garden. It is split into two rooms; a bedroom with bunk beds, and an additional sitting room / playroom area making it ideal for children. However, as they are in a wooden extension which is not centrally heated we would only recommend using the verandah rooms between May and September
There is plenty of room to store walking boots, coats, rucksacks and outdoor gear under the stairs, and a number of clothes airers where you can hang wet things to dry by a heater after a hard day's walking!
One travel cot available & one high chair are kept in the house, room for one more cot in the twin bedroom if you want to bring 2 babies.
Further details outdoors:
There's a large garden with original dry stone walls and a beck (stream) running through it. There is a small natural pool that is excellent for paddling and soaking your feet after a long walk; damming the beck to make the pool bigger and deeper provides hours of entertainment for engineers of all ages!! The pool in the garden does mean you need to keep a careful eye on young children when in the garden.
Next to the house is a stone Lakeland barn owned by one of the farms in the village. It's used very occasionally by the farmer and acts as an excellent windbreak for the house. Your only neighbours are the sheep and cows in the fields.
Access: Access to the cottage from the roadside where you park your car is via a short, steep, rocky track which is unsuitable for anyone with walking difficulties. Please contact us if you have any specific questions about this.

BookThe Cumbria/Lake District region
The Lake District is famous for its beautiful mountains and lakes, wonderful walking and breathtaking scenery.
Cumbria, at the very north of England, is amongst its most beautiful regions. The Lake District National Park has long been celebrated for its mirror lakes and craggy peaks. There are also an abundance of pretty villages and towns. The Lake District is heaven for those who love the outdoors, with sailing, rock climbing and hiking and much more on offer. Cumbria has sandy coastlines and interesting towns to visit, including old-fashioned Penrith.
The Keswick / Buttermere area
Bowderbeck is situated in the Buttermere valley, just outside Buttermere village in the North West corner of the Lake District National Park. The nearest towns are Keswick and Cockermouth, 8-10 miles away.
The name Buttermere means "the lake by the dairy pastures". Buttermere village lies on the flat, fertile land between two lakes, Buttermere and Crummock Water which were originally one post-glacial lake and the land was created by the debris washed down from the surrounding hills. Buttermere lake is owned by The National Trust, and is 1½ miles long, ¾ mile wide and 75 feet deep.
Whether you're looking for an active holiday or just want to relax and enjoy the mountains and the peace and quiet, there are so many possibilities from Bowderbeck including fell-walking, fishing, mountain biking, adventure sports, horse riding, bird watching, historic houses, museums, boat trips and much more... please see our website for full details and links.
