The Lake District is frequently voted Britain's finest landscape, and Orchard Barn has the best view of that landscape. You could sit out on the patio to soak it up, or view it from the picture windows in all the main rooms. It's an ideal base for a family reunion, or a group of friends here for a walking holiday.

Applethwaite hamlet is secluded, quiet and intimate, with freedom to roam right from the door; and yet lively Keswick with its outdoor shops, theatre, cinema and multiple attractions is only 2 km away. Derwent Lea has its own secure garden, plus use of the surrounding four acre field.

Orchard Barn is on three storeys. On the ground floor is the magnificent lounge, with plenty of room for all twelve, a coal fire, freesat TV and DVD. Also here is the fine dining area, again with a table for all twelve, and a fully equipped kitchen for all those meals to share together. Outside the patio has fabulous views over the valley and is a great place to have a BBQ, smoke, or just sit and share a drink and the view. Upstairs on the first floor are three of the bedrooms, the shower room and a WC, and on the top floor the other three bedrooms and the bathroom. The bedrooms are comfortable, but all are quite small. The top floor have Velux windows.

Parking, and the second entrance, are on the first floor, which at the back of the house is on ground level. There is room for up th five cars, and overspill parking just fifty yards away.

There is also a paddock for children to play in, adjoining the patio.

Further details outdoors

Visitors seem to love the patio which has breath-taking views; just the place for a leisurely drink or a BBQ at the end of a day on the fells, or to spend the evenings chatting and putting the world to rights. It's also where the smokers in the party tend to congregate! Children love the paddock with the hens and pet pigs. Added to that, we own the four acre field that surrounds the house, and you are welcome to use it as you will.

The Lake District

The Lake District is regularly voted the finest scenery in Britain, and Keswick is at its heart. Soaring mountains, beautiful tranquil lakes, sparkling rivers and so many places of interest you could spend months here and not exhaust the possibilities. Keswick prides itself on being 'the Adventure Capital' of England, and you can take part in virtually every outdoor activity: walking, climbing, sailing, canoeing, horse riding, golf, even paragliding. It's not always sunny of course, but even on wetter days there are castles, museums, stately homes, and many other covered attractions to visit, and as the saying goes, there has to be a little rain to keep the lakes topped up!


Keswick town is perfect for visitors, with outdoor shops, a wonderful theatre, cafes spilling out onto the streets, and Lake road leading down to its jewel, lovely Lake Derwentwater. At the newly refurbished foreshore you can stroll to Friar's Crag, take a rowing boat out for an hour or more, take a trip on one of the graceful launches, or hire anything from a canoe or a windsurfer to a dinghy, -with wetsuits provided.

Where Keswick is busy and bustling, Applethwaite is tranquil and peaceful. You're more likely to come across a hen, pig or duck than a motorbike, and to wander through its peaceful lanes is a pleasure indeed. There are no facilities, save for the little chapel, but with Keswick just a couple of miles away, who needs them?
