The Island of Gozo region

Discovering Gozo is the key to discovering one of the most untouched and unique islands in the Mediterranean. Gozo is the perfect island holiday destination, a serene land where time has stood still. An all-year round destination, Gozo is ideal for beach holidays, religious or historical travel, an eco-holiday, a walking holiday or just an opportunity to get away from it all and indulge in great food, great beaches and an exceptional culture. It is also paradise for those after a diving holiday in the crystal-clear Mediterranean waters.

Gozo's towns and villages are picturesque and tranquil; here life has barely changed for hundreds of years and many traditions are still upheld. These towns are spaced out, detached by countryside and built around the central church or 'pjazza' – the hub of village life. Tourists and visitors will be welcomed by the locals and encouraged to enjoy the gems that each town has to offer.

Gozo is many things to many different people, but above all it is truly special, tranquil and unique

Gozo – covers an area of 67 km or 26 square miles, it is 9 miles long by 4 ½ miles wide and known as the sleepy island full of grace and charm.

Gozo's population is about 31,000 (approx). Despite its compact size, Gozo has a lot to offer. Historical places can be found in an abundance, as a visit to the Ggantija temples is a must! It is believed that these temples are older than the Pyramids of Egypt in actual fact. They date back to 3.500 years B.C !

Gozo – Other places of interest include the museum of Archaeology in Victoria, which is full of archaeological remains and pre-historic artefacts. The Citadel (Victoria 'Capital City'), the folklore museum in Gharb, Xerri's Grotto, Ninu's Cave and Calypso's Cave, which can be found in Xaghra. 'Ta Pinu' Sanctuary, where, at the turn of the century a local peasant woman had apparitions from Our Lady, is a very special and Holy Place.

Xewkija Dome dedicated to St. John the Baptist is the largest dome on Gozo, 'Ta Cenc' cliffs and Dolmens, the Azure Window, the Inland Sea and the Fungus Rock all in Dwejra, Ramla Bay one of the Maltese islands largest beaches with its unique orange coloured sand and the old part of Victoria are places to note and visit, whilst on the island of Gozo. If you're looking for a destination that offers more than just a suntan, Gozo will definitely deliver beyond your expectations!

Kercem

Kercem is the village closest to Rabat (main town) and its name is probably derived from that of a family living in the area in the 15th century. The population of this village is of approximately 1,905. This fertile valley is one of the most picturesque in Gozo and it is further embellished by a charming spring dating back to 1698. A traditional procession used to wind its way from the cathedral in the Citadel to the parish church of Kercem, on 12 March, the feast of Pope Gregory the Great, to whom the parish is dedicated together with the Virgin Mary of Perpetual Succour. The village spreads between Wied il-Lunzjata valley, Ghar ilma, the green hills of Tal-Mixta, and San Raflu. The village of Kercem is ideal for walking and cycling.

Should you fancy a day at the beach Ramla Bay with its unique honey-red sand is the largest and most popular beach on the island and can be reached by car in 10 minutes.

The village feast is celebrated on the second Sunday of the month of July and is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Perpetual Succour, at this time of year you will see the village decorated and see spectacular firework displays, where village succumbs to a wonderful vibrancy.
