Shelbourne
About the home
An elegant address centrally located in the heart of Kenmare, one of Ireland’s most stylish towns, 3 Shelbourne Street is an unexpected delight. This beautifully restored terraced Georgian house is a classic example of how good taste and attention to detail can combine to create a luxurious holiday home for a family, group of friends or couple wishing to sample a taste of one of Ireland’s most renowned culinary and touring areas.
As you walk along Shelbourne Street, the quietest street within this historic planned town, past The Park Hotel and The Lime Tree restaurant, your eye is drawn to one building nestling in a short terrace at the end of the street. The exterior is painted soft contemporary greens and creams and is tucked behind original wrought iron railings and a pretty front garden.
Behind the front door of the Shelbourne Street Townhouse is a gracious home offering a unique base for enjoying both the hustle and bustle of Kenmare town and the sightseeing options close by. The sitting room is furnished in different shades of coffee and cream with a warming log fire and views onto the street and the private and extensive garden at the back of the house. Carefully restored original wooden floors and silk curtains reveal the owners talents as an interior designer and proprietor of one of Munster’s leading interiors shops, The White Room. Sofas and reading chairs offer a tasteful room ideal for relaxing after a days touring in the area.
Downstairs at garden level is the heart of the Irish home, the basement kitchen, and again here the classic black and white flooring, the old fireplace with its wood burning stove and antique dressers all give a flavour of how the house might have looked in the past. A circular dining table seats four and looks out onto the garden and mature trees. Every modern comfort is catered for.
Moving upstairs past windows that show the mountains in the distance and the church steeples of the town, on the first floor is the master bedroom. With its wrought iron four poster bed and large windows allowing the morning sun into the room combined with the cream and biscuit shades used in the room, this is a haven of relaxation. The bathroom is located alongside the master bedroom and offers a lovely view over the town and countryside beyond. The traditional cast iron bath and power shower offer modern conveniences in a stylish setting with luxurious drapes and high ceilings adding to the effect.
Up another level to the spacious converted attic is the second bedroom offering a twin bed configuration and with ample space for a third bed or cot if required. This room is decorated in soft blue and gold tones with skylights to the front and back allowing lots of natural daylight in and affording great views of the town and surrounding areas.
The property offers a large back garden with direct access leading onto bustling Henry Street and means that all of the facilities of the town are at your disposal both at the front and back door of the house. Kenmare is renowned for its stylish shops such as The White Room, Bijou Boutique, Vanilla Grape and Sue D Knits and restaurants including The Purple Heather, Packies, Mulcahys, Salvados amongst others – all just minutes away from Shelbourne Street Townhouse.
Kenmare is also ideally located for touring the world famous Ring of Kerry, the lesser known but equally beautiful Ring of Beara, West Cork, the Killarney National Park and Lakes of Killarney and Dingle and the Slea Head peninsula.
