Please be aware of this where very young children are concerned, however there is still plenty of space at the side of the cottage to be able to play safely.

There are open views from the cottage and although it is in a quiet position it is not isolated; there being several other cottages and bungalows in the immediate vicinity. The cottage consists of a sitting room, dining room, kitchen, 2 double bedrooms, 1 single bedroom and bathroom. Please note that the single bed is only 30" wide but is full length. Electricity is included in the rental price. Up to 2 dogs are allowed by prior arrangement. Heating is provided by night storage heaters and electric fires.

The cottage is situated in a small hamlet 3/4 mile from Levens village and 6 miles south of Kendal on the fringe of the English Lake District. It is easily reached from the M6 motorway and the Kendal link road; being approximately 1.6 miles from latter.

The nearest village, Levens, is reached via a quiet country lane and is about 15 minutes walk away and consists of a Hairdressers and a General Store selling newspapers in addition to general provisions. There is a Public House; the Hare & Hounds; a further 5 minutes walk from the village and two further Public Houses within two miles of the cottage. Bar meals are available at all these Public Houses.

Levens is served by a local bus service, but as the service is infrequent a car is essential to get the best out of the area. The nearest town is Kendal, a typical market town. On the outskirts can be found two supermarkets, one at either end of the town.

The Cumbria/Lake District

Cumbria's valleys and fells (as the low mountains are known) are home to idyllic villages, high moorlands and picturesque lakes. Literary buffs will enjoy Wordsworth's Dove Cottage (go in March to see daffodils), and if you've got kids in tow, visit The World of Beatrix Potter. Or just enjoy a leisurely drive through beautiful scenery.

The most popular area is around Lake Windermere, easily accessible from Levens. In season there are steamers that operate on the lake as well as small craft operating from Lakeside, Bowness and Ambleside. A steam railway connects Lakeside to Haverthwaite, a village on the main Barrow road. Other places worth a visit are Hawkshead, Tarn Hows (near Hawkshead), Grasmere, as well as Beatrix Potter's house at Sawry.

Grange over Sands is a small town situated on Morecambe Bay approximately 8 miles from Levens. It features a small park with duck pond, a pedestrian only promenade at the end which there are tennis courts, bowling and putting greens.

Kendal is a town that is better explored on foot, it has numerous 'yards' or alleyways and is most famous for its Kendal Mint Cake and is the home of 'K' shoes. Catherine Parr, sixth wife of Henry VIII, was born in Kendal Castle, which enjoys a splendid view over the town. The view still repays the effort in the climb, though the castle itself is in ruins.

Near the parish church, one of the largest and most imposing in the country, stands Abbot Hall. This elegant Georgian house is now an equally elegant art gallery, showing works by many of the artists - including Ruskin and Constable - who were inspired by the Lakeland landscapes.

One of Kendal's best known sons was Alfred Wainwright, whose immaculately hand-written guides to the Lakeland hills became classics in his own lifetime. You can see his little office in the Museum of Natural History and Archaeology.

Levens is a small village about 6 miles from Kendal and is home to Levens Hall, home of the Bagot family. The beginnings of the Hall can be traced back to the 14th century, which was incorporated into a more elaborate Elizabethan building. The most famous feature is the topiary garden in which yew trees have been clipped into a variety of shapes.

Also in the vicinity of Levens is Sizergh Castle, home of the Strickland family since 1239 and now in the custody of the National Trust.
