The Cumbria/Lake District
Cumbria is one of, if not the most, beautiful county in England with majecstic fells and views to take your breath away it is a must to visit.
There are plenty of family activities in Cumbria to turn your hand to old and new skills that you might like to try and take away a true Cumbrian experience.
Activities in the Lake District include ten pin bowling, climding walls, laser quest, nature trails and children's playgrounds there is something for children of all ages.
For the more adventurous Lake District activities there is fell walking, mountain biking, watersports, tree top walks to name but a few.
We can't guarantee the weather however we can guarantee that you will never ne short of things to do in the Lakes.
Kendal is an old market town situated in one of the most beautiful parts of the country – the English Lake District. Kendal is also within 30 minutes drive of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, making it a perfect base for walkers and sightseers alike. The town's unique blend of history, culture and shopping make it a very popular destination for visitors.
There are attractions for all ages, fascinating museums, modern and historic art and a variety of leisure facilities. The shopping is diverse with many High Street names but the town is known particularly for specialist shops – quality independent traders offering a range of goods unrivalled anywhere in the Lake District.
For many years Kendal was one of the most important wool towns in the country, even more important than West Yorkshire. The town was also a stopping off point for cattle drives from Scotland as well as a very important market (which still continues today).
Kendal is also famous for Kendal Mint Cake, K Shoes and Kendal Minfest a street festival which takes place in September every year.
Its a great place to visit which is why its no surprise that it has been voted the second best place to live in England according a list compilied by The Sunday Times.

"cosy, relaxing get away"
We stayed at Ashstead for 2 nights. It's very easy to find. The lounge is warm & comfy, The kitchen is well kitted out although we didn't do much cooking, the fridge is large enough for a family and a washer & dryer is available if required. The beds are very comfortable and the bedrooms are also warm & cosy with plenty of wardrobe/cupboard space. Altogether a wonderfully relaxing stay in a lovely house in a stunning setting.

"A perfect escape for young families, can't wait to go again"
We stayed at Ashstead for 3 nights between Xmas and New Year - 4 adults and 4 children [all under 5!]. It's down a long track on the side of a hill in a beautiful part of Kendal, and it's easy to find from the main road as the track leads directly to it. It was bigger inside than we expected having seen the photos. The lounge is comfy and welcoming, leading to a large dining room with plenty of room [and a high chair which was extremely useful!!]. The kitchen is really well kitted out, washer/dryer/big fridge and plenty of plates/pans/serving dishes etc so don't take anything extra with you. Helen kindly provides all of the basics for your stay, which I wasn't expecting, the welcome pack is much more than the norm. Upstairs is comfy and features two large double bedrooms and a children's room with two sets of bunk beds. No expense has been spared with the fixtures and fittings, they're all in-keeping with the age of the cottage and the beds are so comfy! You'll just need your own towels.
We experienced a few power cuts during our stay, although the national grid were straight there to sort it out, but Helen and her family were wonderful...they couldn't do enough! She was bringing flasks of boiling water and candles, letting us know how long it would take for them to fix the problem in the area etc. The children actually enjoyed playing by candle light and it was part of the adventure! All in all, a wonderful stay and we'll definitely be back.

"Perfect Family Christmas location"
Ashstead Farmhouse was where we chose to spend Christmas as an extended family (me and my partner, his parents, my parents and siblings - 9 people altogether) and it was the PERFECT choice. Absolutely beautiful house with gorgeous stone walls and fully equipped - there is really very little that our hosts didn't plan for. Very comfortable, gorgeous setting, and only a few miles from Kendal, so very convenient for picking up groceries, etc.
Beautiful house and exceptional hosts, excellent value - only one minor flaw would be that heating took a while to get comfortable in the main room, could use an extra space heater in there for the mornings while its heating up.

"Very well equipped cottage in fantastic location"
We had a fantastic time at Ashstead Farmhouse over half term. The location is fantastic. There are several great walks right on the doorstep and Kendal and the lakes are only a few miles away. The farmhouse is surprisingly large with a very comfortable living room and dining room. The kids loved it, too (aged 4-8) and we can't wait to go back.

"Amazing, relaxing with breathtaking views!"
Booked this cottage first time with friends and we were really blown away with the views and the cottage itself. Very clean, warm, comfortable beds and the fact its self catering! Cook how much you want, have a bbq, play tennis, walk the mountains; its all here!! So yes I have been back here 3 times this year! 5* rating and 5* friendly service from Helen!

"We had a wonderful week at Ashstead Farmhouse - magnificent scenery and the animals were "awesome"!"
We thought we'd been lucky to see the silhouettes of deer on the skyline at dusk, but woke the following morning to see a deer and her fawn from our bedroom window. Then to experience one run out of the wood past us while we were 'roaming' on the fell AND find an antler – WOW! The girls loved the horses; the pony was so friendly (and patient) and the foals are sooo cute! It was great to watch the flock of sheep come past our door – thank you very much for letting my 10 year old son 'help' take them back to the field. Our only disappointment was not actually finding the red squirrels, but we did have fun trying – maybe on our next visit!
