Home description
This traditional semi detached 19th century cottage is situated in a quiet, rural position with views of the Lake District fells and Langdale Pikes in the distance. The cottage is approached down a private drive, a fields distance from the road, making it secluded and quiet and yet it is only 1 1/2 miles north of the mediaeval market town of Kendal, known as the Gateway to the Lakes. The cottage is on the edge of the Lake District National Park which makes it ideally situated for exploring Windermere (8 miles), Ambleside (12 miles) and the central Lake District. A trip up the scenic A6 takes you to the northern access to the lakes - Pooley Bridge for the northern end of Ullswater or onto Keswick for Derwentwater and Borrowdale.
The valleys of Longsleddale and Kentmere are only 4 miles away and they offer dramatic scenery, good walking and birdwatching - buzzards are often seen circling the hills opposite the cottage.
Ten miles east brings you to Sedbergh and the Yorkshire Dales National Park.

The Cumbria/Lake District
The Lake District National Park, in the county of Cumbria, is an area of outstanding beauty, one quarter being owned and protected by the National Trust. The nearby market town of Kendal, known as the Gateway to the Lakes is famous for its Kendal Mint Cake. Lake Windermere, which at 10 1/2 miles long is the largest of the 16 lakes, is a 15 minute drive away. The village of Ambleside, just 5 miles further on from Windermere, is approximately the centre of the lake district, with the lakes radiating out in most directions. Beatrix Potter who wrote and illustrated books for children lived near to Windermere and William Wordsworth the poet and writer lived in Grasmere.
Kendal area
The property is situated on the boundary of the hamlet of Skelsmergh and has good access to both the south and north lakes and the yorkshire dales. Kendal has a good variety of attractions such as The Brewery Arts Centre, which has a good programme of entertainment - films, concerts and exhibitions and The Abbot Hall Art Gallery which contains paintings and sculptures including landscapes by Turner and Ruskin. Kendal Museum and the Museum of Lakeland Life are also well worth visiting. The ruins of Kendal Castle overlook the town. Kendal is the main shopping centre for south lakeland with a good variety of shops, restaurants and supermarkets (Morrisons, Asda, Booths, M&S, Iceland)
How to get there
By rail, Oxenholme Lake District station is approximately 5 miles from the property on the West Coast main line route between London and Glasgow. You could then take the branch line from Oxenholme to Kendal railway station which is 1 1/2 miles from the property.
By road, leave junction 36 of the M6 motorway and take the A591 into Kendal. Then follow the A6 northbound to Skelsmergh. Full directions will be sent with booking.
