The Lake District

With England's five tallest mountains and deepest lake, two national parks, three areas of outstanding beauty and much more, Cumbria's rich natural environment is simply unique. Come to Cumbria and you can't help but want to be part of the landscape. Exploring the great outdoors you will discover some of the most beautiful scenery along with a wealth of flora and fauna.

Come down from the fells to discover the unique culture and personality of Cumbria's towns and villages. From the vibrant, cosmopolitan city of Carlisle and the historical appeal of Kendal to the cobbled streets of Ulverston and the market town charm of Penrith. Each has a story to tell.

Cumbria is also lucky to have many historic houses that are home to magnificent gardens, some world famous, as well as award-winning gardens in their own right that have been lovingly pruned and tended over the years. Parks make great days out too and there is no shortage of wide open spaces where you can have fun and enjoy the clean, fresh air.

The stunning Cumbrian landscape isn't just a natural phenomenon. There is also a social landscape to explore that has been formed over thousands of years and continues to be shaped by modern culture. From poignant ruins to local legends and literary works, the region's history and heritage has played a defining role in the county's identity

Please visit for more information

The Lake District has an astonishing number of attractions for adults, teenagers and younger children. Some local ideas from our experience are:

In the dry…visit Sizergh castle and gardens or Levens Hall; tackle the ‘Maize maze' near Sedgwick; fish for trout at Esthwaite Water; go horse riding or just play football in the garden?

In the rain…go swimming at the Kendal leisure centre; have a cup of tea and cake watching the cows get milked at Low Sizergh barn; visit the Lakes Aquarium; or just play board games by the fire?

In the sun…drive round to Arnside and paddle in the estuary; go fishing with nets on the banks of the river Kent in Levens Park; or just break out the paddling pool?

In most weathers...enjoy a beautiful walk to Helsington Church; along Scout Scar or through Brigsteer Woods; or just take a gentle stroll round the village?

The Lake District is a walker’s paradise, with a huge variety of scenic walks in some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK. There are more challenging hikes for the seasoned walker through to gentle strolls for the post Sunday lunch walkers. You can start several walks from the village itself.

"A lovely family cottage"

We stayed here just after the easter weekend. The cottage is very nice and really dont have anything bad to say about it.

nice secure garden for the kids to play in with toys available inside and outside. WiFi is very useful and probably most people cant do without it nowadays.

maybe the only downside is that we want to buy a log burner now!!!

there are no shops in the village and the pub is currently being renovated. If that is important, then look elsewhere - otherwise thoroughly recomended - just book it!!!

"A fantastic cottage in a great setting"

We spent a long weekend at barnhaven on a chilly weekend in March, the cottage was warm and cosy, well furnished and very clean. The location was second to none in Brigsteer, picturesque and very quiet but only a few minutes from Kendal. The whole cottage is in great decorative order and the feature beams were stunning in all the rooms. Extremely comfortable beds and bedding and loads of space.
A fantastic place to stay and would thoroughly recommend it, we will be planning another stay as soon as we can.

"Really comfy and cosy Lakes cottage"

We arrived late on a Friday evening and the cottage was already cosy and warm. The wood burner in the living room was welcome and the freee wood store outside meant that we could keep a lovely fire going. The dining / kitchen was a real social hub for our weekend. The bedrooms and bathrooms were great and we would definitely stay again. A very nice cottage

"Peaceful and great location!"

We are a family of five and we stayed at Barnhaven for four nights. The main downside for all of us is that our time there was too short!
