The South/Borders region
Kelso, like many historic towns in the Scottish Borders, has a long history with early ecclesiastical communities. During the 12th and 13th centuries, Kelso town was the Abbey. As over the centuries the Abbey was gradually abandoned, the stone from it was used to build domestic buildings.
By the 18th century Kelso was a thriving market town and it was not unusual for the major trades and business people of the town to rebuild, reface and generally upgrade their medieval dwellings. A pattern of medieval at the back and Queen Anne or Georgian at the front became common. With additions, subtractions and general to-ing and fro-ing of purpose, the town has retained a beautiful and interesting mix of domestic and industrial architecture.
