eight of us have just spent a fantastic four days at Glebe House. The house is so large and comfortable lots of fuel for the fire. Hundreds of books and lots of board games. every room is very well equipped nothing you would need to take for your stay, The garden is lovely with a stream running at the bottom of the lawn. Kirk yetholm and Morebattle pretty villages nearby serve delicious food. we would definetely recommend this place and we will be returning next year.
Response: So glad you liked Glebe House and wish to return again next year. Yes the local hostelries are now catering for 'foodies' and serving excellent fare. Many opportunities to sample local ingredients from Tweed salmon to Border lamb!
Glebe house is one of the most beautiful houses I have had the pleasure of staying in, it's location is quiet and the views are second to none! There a plenty of walks on the doorstep, a few of which we had the pleasure of tackling on our stay, these would also make brilliant mountain bike trails (here's wishing I had taken my bike!) The grounds are also stunning and with the mass of outdoor games supplied at the house you could have a week of fun withou even going out the gate! With the main town of Kelso being just a 15minute drive down the road it's easy to stock up on anything you might need, we also traveled to a couple of local castles in the area which were great for a day out! Berwick upon tweed is about 40 mins drive and is a lovely seaside town with possibly the best fish and chips I have ever had. All in all a brilliant long weekend and I can't wait to go back!!
Response: Thanks for such a happy sounding review - we agree - it is a great mountain biking area, and as for the fish and chips in Berwick, I will have to suggest that to others too. You may also hire a skippered boat and fish off shore next time!

“Fantastic house in a beautiful picturesque setting.”
Lovely big house with plenty of room for children to run around in and dog friendly. Stayed over Easter with the family. Lots of walks even though the weather was cold but sunny with snow on the... more
Response: Thank you for your kind review. so glad you will be returning - remember it is also glorious in summer!
“A fantastic place for a large number of guests, superbly equipped in every respect.”
A quiet, peaceful and comfortable house. Surrounded by beautiful countryside with a river running around the perimeter of the garden. It was beautifully kept and had many areas to explore for children. Lots of fun games and jigsaws for adults and children alike. Each room was incredibly well equipped especially the kitchen and dining room. The open fire was supplied with plentiful logs and coal. Warm beds each with electric blankets were a nice surprise! Wifi was very useful to keep in touch with life if you felt the need. It was a real 'home from home'. Many books on different topics were available to read and the children loved late night stories of William Wallace.
Response: Thanks so much for a lovely review - clearly showing me that you had enjoyed a very happy time at Glebe House with your extended family.

“Charming Family House in a peaceful rural setting.”
Very peaceful location. House ideal for family groups enjoying walks and family games around a log fire. House well equipped and spacious and lovely garden and wildlife. Remote location makes for poor mobile phone reception. Some of us think this a bonus. Bulging bookshelves mean that it would be difficult to run out of reading material.
Response: thank you for your review - we appreciate the time you took to do this following your stay.

“Amazing house with an amazing garden in an great location.”
We stayed in this house for four nights....the fourth night being free of charge which was a bonus and we cldnt have asked for a better place to stay. Everything about was brilliant. Not to far to go if you want some nice shops and lots of nice walks. The garden was beautiful and as the weather was really nice sitting by the river at the bottom of the garden was warm and peaceful. Everything needed for the fire and central heating was provided as was an abundance of towels etc. I will definatly be back to this property in the future and would recommend it.
Response: Really nice to receive your kind review - thank you for taking the time!
“Beautiful, spacious house in quaint, quiet Scottish borough”
My family and I (4 adults, 4 kids) stayed in Glebe House at Hownam for three days. When I vacation in a new place I enjoy getting deep into the rich culture of the region, not necessarily partaking of the popular touristy "make-sure-you"'s... Glebe House is perfect for that kind of trip. We hiked the nearby hillside to Hownam steeple, we explored ancient cemeteries and churches, talked to local townsfolk, did genealogical research, took a daytrip to Edinburgh. One of my favorite trips to date.
Response: Thank you for your comments - we do hope you will manage to return soon!

“Wonderful gardens and spacious comfortable house.”
We liked it very much but we thought it needed a bit of renovation especially the sitting room chairs! The dishwasher too is close to being on it's last legs and we had to rewash a lot by hand after it had been through the dishwasher. However we had a lovely time there all 11 of us. Sarah is delightful.
Response: Thank you for writing your review and I agree with you about the chairs and they are now renewed and refreshed. The dishwasher surprised me so we have checked and rechecked and fitted a new filter so everything comes out sparkling. We hope to welcome you again soon.

“A fabulous place for a very special holiday”
We stayed here in February with teenagers, oldies, stressed out in betweeners and dogs - what a great place for us to bring our family together. There was nothing we could have asked for as this home had everything. Sarah is a wonderful woman and made sure this was a perfect holiday retreat. We walked, played in the garden, visited local places, curled up by the fire and enjoyed every minute! Perhaps a tad too much to drink on one night but we laughed most of the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed a really special holiday.
Response: Thank you for your kind review - we look forward to welcoming you back again for some R and R!
We had an excellent stay for my dads 60th birthday. There was plenty of room for 10 adults and a 7 month old child, lots of bathrooms so no queue in the morning! The photos don't really do this house justice, the living room is huge, the gardens are beautiful and there is a nice big kitchen to cater for large groups. We made good use of the large dining room for a murder mystery night and the fire was welcome after playing croquet in the February wind!
The location is very peaceful, But close enough for a drive into Kelso, where there is a large sainsburys if you've forgotten anything. The surrounding hills were great for an afternoon walk after over indulging!
Would love to return in the summertime and would recommend to anyone. Sarah was very helpful with any questions and requests and booking was straightforward.
Response: Thank you for your helpful comments in the review. Hope to see you again at Glebe House - maybe you will manage a summer visit this time?! S

“quality family time, fantastic house. families from New Zealand, Leicester UK”
Fantastic house, So welcoming and home from home. Ideal location for some rest and relaxing with everything not that far away when you fancy a trip out. Ideally for a day trip to Edinburgh which we did and loved every moment of it. Perfect for our three collie dogs to explore. Could not fault a thing, would go back tomorrow if I could. 5 stars for everything.
Response: Thank you for your helpful comments_ it is really good to read that you enjoyed it so much.

“An excellent and relaxing escape.”
Myself and my friends had an excellent time at Glebe House. The house itself is a wonderful building full of character and with all the facilities and equipment you could wish for. The surrounding gardens are large and well-maintained and provide a great place to relax when the weather's good. The setting in Hownam is both peaceful and picturesque with many interesting walking trails accessible around the village. It should be noted that the location is relatively isolated, but if you're looking for a getaway from city life it's great. We had a wonderful time and would recommend it.
Response: So glad you liked the house last summer and thank you for youe helpful review. Hope to see you again at Glebe for another visit perhaps?
“Tranquility, comfort and wildness-an perfect holiday destination”
Glebe House for our extended family holiday was a perfect place to rest, recharge, read, play badmington on the lawn, fish in the stream(we put everything back which amounted to 1 eel!) and walk. The garden was big enough and enclosed enough for the children and teenagers to run off and amuse themselves without danger, the stream being a special attraction. Walks were plentiful and locak trips proved very popular with the older generation who were not so able to walk: Lindisfarne, Hawick, Jedburgh and local family history jaunts to local graveyeards. We even met some Moaris at the graveyard in Hownam doing the same! When tired a coffe in the sun or evening watching the lverets feed from their mother was the highlight of the day. Truly an enjoyable holiday, Thank you
Response: Thank you for writing such a nice review after your visit for us. The leverets were obviously a huge success too. The spring garden today is a carpet of golden yellow aconites and blue scilla and white snowdrops - very different from summer.Hope to welcome you all back again soon.

“Lovely spacious house with exceptional gardens and beautiful rural location”
The bedrooms and bathrooms are very spacious, plenty of room for extra z-beds, cots etc if you want them. A great advantage was knowing eveything was included in the price - linen, electricity, even domestic supplies (laundry, washing up, loo roll, hand soap, dishwash tabs) are aplenty so you can pack light. We also arranged a supermarket grocery delivery that was checked and put away for us in advance of arrival-fantastic! The gardens are enormous and well kept. There was room for one group to play badminton, another to play cricket, wee ones in the paddling pool, older ones sunbathing - all in plenty of space all at the same time! The house feels like a family home and you feel welcome within it.
Response: Thank you so much for writing such a full review and it is nice that you appreciated the extras we include in the price to save on the bulk packing!
Hope to see you all again soon at Glebe House

“Tranquil retreat in the Scottish Borders that caters for all ages.”
My husband and I and various family members have stayed at Glebe House several times between January 2007, when we celebrated my husband's 70th. birthday, and 2010. Glebe House is situated between Kelso (good for the races) and historical Jedburgh; and yet is surrounded by breathtaking countryside which is ideal for walking. The house is extremely comfortable with plenty of space; and the gardens are large and beautiful, with a summerhouse and facilities for barbecues. The kitchen is very well equipped, and the amenities are excellent, with TV, DVD and CD players, radios, Broadband, and a huge selection of books. The service provided by the owner is excellent. My only reservation is that in extreme Winter the weather can be harsh.
Response: Thank you for your kind and accurate comments! As a frequent visitor in all seasons, you have certainly stayed in all weathers - but remember that we have a new central heating boiler now which adds to the ease and comfort of the house! Come soon again!
A charming and peaceful place to stay. Lovely old house - very big rooms and garden, plenty of space for children to run around and play in, even when it rained. Lots of wildlife - a hare and her four babies visited every evening, just outside the kitchen window. Great for hill walking / cycling straight out of the door - no need to drive anywhere.
Response: Thank you for your lovely review last summer. Yes it is a place of serenity which welcomes you then makes it hard to leave, so glad you loved the wildlife too!

“Four-in-a-row”
This is our fourth year in a row of visiting Glebe House and the best weather we have had during our weekend visits. Fished the Teviot this year which was great and the Kale of course, lots of walking and we visited Kelso and Jedburgh as usual, but of course its about relaxing and being able to sit out all day having a few beers, and listening to good music and having a couple of drams in the evening was bliss, and all of us coming from the city always enjoy the lack of traffic. Already looking forward to next year. The peace and quiet may not suit everyone but it works for us.
Response: What a wonderful group you are! Thank you for your kind words and do keep coming, cooking up those huge delicious meals and enjoying the fishing!

“wonderful house great location”
had a great 4 night stay in Glebe House at the start of our St Cuthberts Walk challenge-perfect location and great house-meant we didn't walk as far as we should have but great excuse to book Glebe House again!!!! I cant think of anything negative even the weather was kind and the BBQ's great in such a beautiful setting
Response: Thank you for your kind review. You were such an energetic group of walkers and it was a pleasure to know you could relax and enjoy the house too along St Cuthbert's Way!
This is the second year in a row, that I and a group of friends have stayed at Glebe House. As a group, we have been travelling to the Borders for over decade to play golf and happened upon Glebe House a couple of years ago. It may be a little of the beaten track for some, but do not be put off by this; it is only a ten minute drive to the main Kelso Road.
The property itself is simply a superb reminder of what luxury homes used to be. As the former manse for Hownam - the locals call it "Hoonam" - the house offers accommodation for ten people comfortably. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the amenities are more than adequate. Outside the gardens are simply wonderful offering magnificent views of the neighbouring Cheviots. There is a stream at the bottom of the garden and a lawn big enough for us to easily play cricket upon! There is an outhouse and a BBQ station.
It is a lovely place to come home to after 36 holes of golf. You have room to spread out and relax and you are well away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
All of us have thoroughly enjoyed our two stays at Glebe House and will be looking to return. I cannot recommend it highly enough, but please don't book it in August: we want it again!
Response: Thank you for your lovely description in the review you gave! So glad you enjoy returning frequently!

“Peaceful, unfussy grandeur.”
This was our 6th late winter visit. That should say it all. The 4 large and elegant bedrooms have housed ourselves, our two sons plus families together with my brother and his wife. It will be more of a squeeze in the future because of rising numbers. Perhaps we will campaign for one of the bathrooms to be returned to its former function as a fully sized double bedroom. There are two like that.
Log fires, oceans of space, elegance without prissiness, a wonderful outlook, excellent heating, wildlife all around (saw a stoat this year in its winter ermine), a vigorous river at the end of the garden - that ticks our boxes.
If you want a handy pub or a supermarket nearer than 10 miles then don't bother with here. If, like us, you want to relax in the kind of country house you would love to own then book immediately, but not in February please.
Response: I love your review, you say it all so well. We look forward to your return visit - no 7 ! glad you enjoyed the new shower too.
