Enquire nowThe Scottish Borders region
The Scottish Borders is renowned for its turbulent history, fishing, rugby, golfing and rolling landscape. The Tweed and its tributaries are the life blood of the Borders defining the countryside, villages, towns and the people. The river stretches over 97 miles through the Borders to the sea at Berwick.
Covering about eighteen hundred square miles, the Scottish Borders stretches from the rolling hills and moorland in the west, through gentler valleys to the rich agricultural plains of the east, and on to the rocky Berwickshire coastline with its secluded coves and picturesque fishing villages.
Whether you explore by car, on bike or on foot, you'll discover friendly towns and picturesque villages, as well as the castles, abbeys, stately homes and museums that illustrate the exciting and often bloody history of the area. It's that history which is commemorated in the Common Ridings and other local festivals, creating a colourful pageant much enjoyed by visitors and native Borderers alike.
The area is a paradise for hillwalkers and cyclist of all types while in the River Tweed and its many tributaries, you'll find some of the best fishing in Scotland. The Scottish Borders is also home to rugby and passion and rivalry inevitably emerge as the Rugby Sevens tournament gets under way through spring and summer.
The Kelso area
Kelso, with its cobbled streets, is arguably the most attractive Border town. Located where the rivers Tweed and Teviot meet at the world famous Junction Pool the town is a Mecca for fishermen. Relax in the town and browse around the traditional and boutique shops. There are plenty of pubs, cafes and restaurants to enjoy. Attractions include the majestic Floors Castle and Kelso Racecourse. Springwood Park is the home of the Border Union Show and hosts many other events including dog shows, ram sales and fishing fair. All are within walking distance of our property.
July sees the town celebrates the border tradition of Common Riding, known as Kelso Civic Week. The festival lasts a full week and is headed by the Kelsae Laddie with his Right and Left Hand Men. The Laddie and his followers visit neighbouring villages on horseback with the climax being the Yetholm Ride on the Saturday. There are many competitions and social events every day.
