The Central England / Cotswolds / Oxfordshire region
The area is one of the quietest in Southern Britain, almost exclusively agricultural, as it has been for hundreds of years. The Thames rises only a few miles further West in Gloucestershire and offers delightful walks along its towpaths, past villages or inns built for travellers by land and water. The wide river plain creates grand skyscapes, punctuated by woodland and distant hills. Summer can bring days of great warmth and very cold spells are common in winter. Bird life is abundant with colonies of rooks, and many songbirds, some now rare in other areas. Oxfordshire and the city of Oxford (only half an hour away by road) are at the heart of Southern England, full of delights for visitors and within easy driving distance of the Cotswold Hills, Cheltenham, the Berkshire and Witshire Hills, Bath Spa and lively Bristol.
Kelmscott, Oxfordshire area
William Morris called Kelmscott 'a little piece of heaven on earth'. Forget traffic, yellow lines, crime. This is real rural tranquillity. Celebrity spot at weekends at The Plough, 100 yards (out of the wrought iron gate at the end of the garden), a C16 inn and excellent restaurant (all newly renovated). Frequent music (Jazz, Folk and Rock) at The Trout at St John's Bridge a mile or two up the road towards Lechlade. The Upper Thames is 200 yards away. Lechlade, Faringdon and other charming market towns a few miles away. Burford is about 10 miles, Oxford 18 miles, and Cheltenham 25 miles.
Kelmscott Manor was the country home of William Morris - poet, craftsman and socialist - from 1871 until his death in 1896. The Manor, which he called 'the loveliest haunt of ancient peace' contains a collection of the possessions and works of Morris and his associates, including furniture, textiles, carpets and ceramics. The house is open from early April till the end of September every Wednesday from 11am-5pm and eight Saturdays from 2-5pm. The garden opens on Thursdays from June to September. Please check on 01367 252486.
Buscott Manor is also nearby, with beautiful grounds and a variety of concerts, sales and other events.
Riding can be arranged through Wickstead Farm Equestrian Centre 01793 762265 Lechlade and Bampton have trout-fishing lakes. (There is also the River Thames - day licences can be bought at pubs) The Cotswold Water Park is just the other side of Lechlade, as is the Cotswold Wildlife Park and Gardens. Day boats can be hired from The Swan at Radcot and from The Riverside Inn at Lechlade
The house is suitable accommodation for Cheltenham Races and the Fairford International Air Show Riverside pubs (many)
Lechlade is an ancient town that takes its name from the River Leach, a tributary of the ‘stripling Thames’. The magnificent C15th St Lawrence’s church was built from the same golden Taynton stone that was shipped down the Thames to build St Paul's Cathedral. The slim spire is a landmark for miles around. To the N of the church is Shelley’s Path, where in 1915 he composed ‘A Summer Evening’. As now, the pinnacles can be ‘like pyramids of fire’ at sunset.
Once a market town on a busy coaching route to London, Lechlade is still a shopping centre for neighbouring villages, and has several splendid old buildings including the lovely C17th Church House next to the churchyard.
Across Halfpenny Bridge, where the navigable Thames begins, nearby Inglesham marks the start of the Thames and Severn Canal, opened in 1789 and finally closed in 1927. Downstream from Halfpenny Bridge, the towpath offers a pleasant walk along oxbow bends through water meadows to St Johns Lock, the first on the Thames.
