Welcome to the other Kells, in the county of Kilkenny; our thatched cottage is located opposite the King's river in the quaint village of Kells, Co. Kilkenny. This lovingly restored thatch-roofed Mill Cottage is nestled in an area of great natural beauty and unique archaeological heritage. Originally built in the late 18th century by a local entrepreneurial family, the Mill Cottage was the Mullins family ancestral home. Today the charming thatched cottage has been sympathetically refurbished and restored to recreate old world charm, with a modern twist. The house is surrounded by lovely gardens nurtured by the previous and present owners and resulting in a peaceful and visually stunning landscape.

Kells is a beautiful rural Irish village surrounded by rolling fields leading down to the lively Kings River. With numerous historic buildings, the music and craic in local pubs, as well as local shops and other amenities, Kells is a pleasant place to take a break and relax as well as visiting nearby places of interest, such as Kilkenny, Thomastown, Graiguenamanagh and Inistioge. Walking in and around Kells village is peaceful and full of discoveries. A 12th century Augustinian Priory adjacent to the Mill Cottage is one the most magnificent medieval monuments in Ireland. Kilree, an old religious site with an impressive round tower, high cross and ancient church, is a pleasant 1.5km walk from the village center. There are also a number of activity trails throughout the county and can be found by searching local websites.

"Perfect self-catering cottage in enchanting spot"

We loved staying in this thatched 2-bedroom 1-storey cottage near the ancient ruins at Kells, near Kilkenny - so much so that we came back for an extra night before our return to the airport in Waterford. It is surrounded by the owners' exceptionally pretty garden but inside is so pretty too - very comfortable, clean and well-equipped and really felt like a home-from-home. The owners went out of their way to be welcoming and helpful. We enjoyed a pint in Shirleys, the local bar, and the abbey ruins on the edge of the village are a short walk away. Highly recommend.
