The Ionian Islands region
Kefalonia is the largest island in the Ionian Sea. The island is named after the mythological figure Cephalus. Its impressive caves, green slopes, azure waters and golden beaches offer the visitor infinite opportunities to relax in beautiful surroundings. The mountain of Ainos, covered with Abies cephalonica trees, is declared a natural park.
Kefalonia is also well known for its endangered loggerhead turtle population which nest at Kaminia beach. Pylaros is one of the most unspoiled areas of the island located very close to the mythical island of Ithaka. The small harbor of the Agia Efimia is a preferred spot for sailing boats in Ionian Sea. Myrtos bay, acclaimed as the best beach in all of Greece, is the area's tourist attraction.
Villa Daphni represents one of the best examples of the recently constructed villas in the area, which has become a favoured destination for those seeking a quiet, untouched corner in the Ionian Sea.
Kefalonia / Vassilopoulata area
Villa Daphni is within walking distance of the quiet, picturesque village of Makryotika with traditional bakery, minimarket, cafes, taverna. The largest town nearby is Sami, within 15 minutes' driving distance with port, bank, shops, medical centre, international press, post office and car-rental.
Starting from Villa Daphni, you can follow one of the Local Walk Trails to guide you to the nearby beaches through the Valley of Pyllaros within 60-90 minutes of walk, or uphill to the Monastery of Themata with spectacular views. Also, starting from the harbor of Santa Efimia, take a small boat and visit the near-by Ithaka, Ulysses' final destination, for an one day excursion! Or visit the small hidden beaches in the coastline. Visit the numerous small villages of Pylaros, and enjoy the quiet rural life. The picturesque village of Fiskardo is in 30 km distance. Scuba diving and water-ski courses are offered in Agia Efimia, while cave enthusiasts can visit the Caves of Melissani and Drogarati near Sami.
How to get there
There are direct flights from the UK (approx. 2hs 45mins flying time), the Netherlands and Austria from May until the end of October. Flights via Athens throughout the year (less than an hour's flight from Athens). Kefalonia Airport is known as EFL. SEE www.kefaloniadirect.com for links to all major airline carriers.
There are ferries twice a day from the mainland Greece (Patras and Kyllini) and neighbouring Lefkada, Ithaca and Zakinthos. Also direct from Italy to the port of Sami (10 min drive to Villa Daphni).
Pick up your hire car at Argostoli airport and the journey to the house takes approximately 40 minutes; if you do not drive taxis are available at the airport.
