The Ionian Islands region

Kefalonia lies in the sparkling blue Ionian Sea to the West of mainland Greece.
It is the largest of the Ionian islands, yet has managed to avoid the tourist commercialisation of neighbouring Corfu or nearby Zakynthos. The mystical island of Ithica lies off the North-East coast of Kefalonia.
Kefalonia is a mixture of unspoilt beaches. majestic mountains, fertile green valleys, forests and olive groves. Mount Ainos, in the south of the island, is higher than Britain’s Ben Nevis, and affords wonderful views of the island’s many villages and beaches. The whole island abounds in wild flora and fauna—early Spring sees Kefalonia ablaze with the colours of millions of wild flowers.
Kefalonian people are wonderfully sociable and can be extremely generous. They are very family-orientated and love children.
Kefalonia has two main towns:
Argostoli, the capital, has a full range of shops and services including the island’s main hospital. Lixouri, on the Paliki Peninsula, has more traditional shopping and all one would expect from a small town. There is a frequent ferry service (20 minutes crossing) between Argostoli and Lixouri.
The Kefalonia / Lixouri-Havdata area
Mantoukata is a small hamlet set on a hillside looking out beyond the Gulf to the mountains beyond. If you’re looking for Greece at its most rural then this is for you—the area is mainly farmland (olives, vines and goats..) to the east and mountainside to the west.
This small hamlet sports no shops but, further along the road, in Havdata, there is a mini-market and several tavernas.
However, despite its totally Greek ethnic ambience, Mantoukata is only a few minutes drive from the main Palliki town of Lixouri.
Lixouri is very traditional, offering all the amenities and facilities of a working town. In the main square you will find a large selection of snack and coffee bars. Off the main square are a number of pedestrianised side streets offering numerous shops, tavernas and snack bars. The main promenade of the town is lined by a mixed selection of tavernas offing water-front dining.
Mantoukata is an excellent base for walkers and beach lovers alike. The fabulous Kipouria Monastery is just over the mountain and beaches abound on the South and east coasts of the peninsula.

Great house, ideal for lots of fun given all the accommodation and space. It is also ten minutes from Lixouri by car, which is handy (but also means that towns are not walkable from the villa). The outside entertainment area is great in the afternoons/evenings. The generous swimming pool is where you spend most of your time in the afternoons, given the temperature. The only drawback is the childfriendliness. I would suggest you ask the owners to put a gate up at the bottom of the stairs and to close off the pool with a fence. That will help you relax more if you have young kids. |
