The Ionian Islands region
The Mediterranean Sea counts thousands of islands and Kefalonia is the eleventh largest with 781 sq. km. It belongs to the Ionian Islands which lie off the coast of Western Greece. With its abundant nature, high mountains and beautiful beaches Kefalonia is an ideal island for holiday makers. The landscape is dominated by colour: the dark green fir trees of Mt. Aenos, the turquoise blue of the sea and the incredible hues of bushes and vegetation that change colour with the changing of seasons. The colours and fragrances of these alternating and unique contrasts of the landscape impress themselves irreversibly on the visitor's mind.
Many of the beaches have been awarded with the 'Blue Flag', an international award for clean swimming water and good beach facilities.
Kefalonia is well known for its rare geological phenomena and the visitor can enjoy a visit to Drogarati, a beautiful cave with stalactites and stalagmites and Melissani, another cave with an underground lake of impressive beauty.
During the summer months the past meets the present in a series of events and festivals designed to preserve and reinforce the cultural heritage and tradition, which are particular colourful in this corner of Greece. In general an harmonious blend of the old and the new finds its expression in the daily life on Kefalonia.
Argostoli, the capital, is the perfect place for museum visiting, shopping and it has a vibrant night life. For those who are more interested in enjoying the beauties of nature a series of designed walks are set out in different areas of the island.
The Kefalonia cuisine offers a variety of local dishes which you can enjoy together with the local wine Robola, A first class white wine which is only made on Kefalonia.
Kefalonia / Karavados area
Kefalonia is the largest of the Ionian islands and famous for its natural diversity. The island was the home of the Homeric hero Odysseus and is the place where the filming of the famous Hollywood production ''Captain Corelli'', took place.
From place to place the Kefalonia scenery is different. You can visit mysterious underground lakes and caves, the vast forests of the national park of Mt. Aenos or the endless selection of beaches... long sandy beaches or private little hidden bays surrounded by evergreen pine trees and the emerald blue of the sea . The Island offers a great variety of activities and sightseeing... Ancient sites, Medieval castles, traditional villages and elegant coast resorts. The local kitchen offers a variety of choices. Near Villa Amfiliki you find activities like water sports, Spa, wine tasting, Scuba diving, horse riding as well as sport facilities.
Kefalonia is known as a holiday island for relaxation and is mostly prefered by families for tourism or yachting holidaymakers.
The area around the Villa is peaceful and rural, however just a few kilometres away the capital of the island Argostoli provides a lot of restaurants, bars and services. Villa Amfiliki offers you many choices of nearby beaches such as Loyrdas, Trapezaki, Skala, Makris Yalos and many other isolated sandy beaches at the Livathos area.
