The Ionian Islands region
Kefalonia, the jewel of the Ionian Islands, has stunning beaches and crystal-clear turquoise waters.
Inland you will find majestic mountains and fertile valleys with little villages dotted around. History has led Kefalonia to be a largely undiscovered paradise devoid of mass tourism. This is Greece as we all imagine it. The air is heavy with the smell of thyme and the pace of life is infectiously relaxing.
Visit Kefalonia once and you will always want to return.
Kefalonia / Agios Nikolaos area
Vatsa Bay lies on the southern tip of Pali, Kefalonia’s beautiful and unspoilt western peninsula.
The land surrounding Spiaggia Taverna has been in the Antonellos family for over 300 years but there has been a settlement at Vatsa dating back to 3,000 B.C.
A tranquil river flows to the sea through a small, secluded valley bordered by pine and olive trees. On this river local fishermen moor their brightly coloured boats. A golden sandy beach borders the bay which stretches eastwards towards Kounopetra.
In 1934 Spyros’ father, Nikolaos, discovered the remains of an ancient ‘Temple of Posieden’ on his land. There he found a beautifully preserved ancient dolphin mosaic, which can now be viewed in the Archaeological Museum in Argostoli. Spyro now uses the design on the mosaic as the ‘logo’ for Vatsa Club
The small chapel of Saint Nikolaos, which is open to visitors, stands close to the spot where the ancient remains of the Temple can be found.
This area has breathtaking views over the sea and fantastic sunsets.
The nearest town is Lixouri (about four km.) where there are all the usual holiday facilities.
Nearby Mantzavinata boasts a traditional olive press and a winery, both of which can be visited by the public.
There are many fabulous beaches within easy reach and an 18-hole mini-golf course within two kilometres.
Spiaggia taverna is situated right on the beach and is a must for Grecophiles.
