Villa Varkoula with private patio and pool
Villa | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 6
Villa Varkoula is are located in one of the best areas for water sports and entertainment on Kefalonian at the red sandy beach of Xi. Here they have inflatable water trampolines and games. The area at Xi beach is a resort of it's own with a great variety of restaurants, bars and traditional taverns to choose from. The villa is ideal situated around 1km away from the resort of Xi within walking distance of all the amenities, yet in a quiet area. Our villa has one double bedroom and one twin, both with en-suite bathrooms and individual air-conditioning units. The kitchen is fully equipped with all the amenities you will require for self catering. The patio doors lead onto the pool area, which is enclosed with a fence and oleander, fruit and date palm trees. A BBQ is located just at the side of the patio area great for outdoor dining. Wifi unlimited internet access is available throughout the villa and around the pool and we also have satellite T.V. with sports channels. The beach at Xi is a 3km long stretch of fine red sand and is especially safe for children or non swimmers with it's shallow water. At the far right end of Xi beach are the clay cliffs, from 20 to 30 meters high. The clay is used by the Greeks for face masks. Kounopetra (Moving Stone) is located along the coast, it is a paradoxical natural phenomenon, a rock in the sea that moves rhythmicalally. New in 2012 was the water-park at Kounopetra, with four water slides and a bar/restaurant. The water slides are just around the corner about 10 minutes drive away. The Kipouria Monastery, which houses remarkable relics and post-Byzantine icons is perched on a cliff and has stunning views of the sea and the most beautiful sunset on the island and is located around the coastline from Xi beach. For the more adventurous swimmers, Petani about 20 minutes away is great for snorkelling and on some days the waters are calm and flat, whilst on other they roll in onto the shore. The nearest town is Lixouri (about 4 km away) is a modern town with a harbour, wide tree-lined streets and beautiful squares edged with flowers. It is where you will find all the facilities of a traditional working town, such as shops, restaurants and banks. If you enjoy dining by the harbour, Lixouri is the perfect place. Lixouri is the second most important town of Kefalonia, and boasts beautiful buildings, traditional small houses surrounded by flowers, beautiful squares with quaint cafes, and impressive churches. The small passenger/car ferry which takes about 20 minutes runs regularly every hour and will take you across the harbour to the capital Argostoli. Mantzavinata (just up the lane) from the villas has a mini market and coffee bar and also boasts a traditional olive press and a winery. Caroles 18-hole mini-golf course and snack bar is walking distance away. Vatsa (2 km away) is where can find one of the most exotic fish taverns on the island (occasionally the resident ducks may come to visit). The moon shaped sandy beach is about 200 meters long and 12m wide. Near the beach a small river flows into the sea, and it's used by fishing vessels and sport boats as a small harbour. Both villas are wheelchair friendly, with ramps and bathroom grab bars. Flat access parking is immediately adjacent to the front entrance.

The Ionian Islands region
Kefalonia lies in the sparkling blue Ionian Sea to the West of mainland Greece.
It is the largest of the Ionian islands, yet has managed to avoid the tourist commercialisation of neighbouring Corfu or nearby Zakynthos. The mystical island of Ithica lies off the North-East coast of Kefalonia.
Kefalonia is a mixture of unspoilt beaches. majestic mountains, fertile green valleys, forests and olive groves. Mount Ainos, in the south of the island, is higher than Britain’s Ben Nevis, and affords wonderful views of the island’s many villages and beaches. The whole island abounds in wild flora and fauna—early Spring sees Kefalonia ablaze with the colours of millions of wild flowers.
Kefalonian people are wonderfully sociable and can be extremely generous. They are very family-orientated and love children.
Kefalonia has two main towns:-
Argostoli, the capital, has a full range of shops and services including the island’s main hospital.
Lixouri, on the Paliki Peninsula, has more traditional shopping and all one would expect from a small town.
There is a frequent ferry service (20 minutes crossing) between Argostoli and Lixouri.
The renowned beach at Xi offers all you will need in watersports and entertainment. The beautiful sandy beach extends two kilometres to Mega Lakos beach.
This area has breathtaking views over the sea and fantastic sunsets.
The nearest town is Lixouri (about four km.) where there are all the usual holiday facilities.
Mantzavinata (just up the lane) boasts a traditional olive press and a winery, both of which can be visited by the public.
There are many fabulous beaches within easy reach and an 18-hole mini-golf course within half a kilometre.
There are many tavernas - both in the towns and in the surrounding countryside. Vatsa (2 km) has a wonderful taverna situated right on the beach and is a must for Grecophiles.

"A gem of a villa where all we could hear was goats bells in the olive groves"
Our first time in Kephalonia but it certainly won't be our last. We have had a wonderful time. Our villa was excellent, simply furnished, it had absolutely everything that we could want, and the welcome pack was greatly appreciated, especially as we arrived quite late in the evening so didn't need to worry about finding a supermarket until the next day.
The first thing that struck us when we woke up next morning was the beautifully clean pool in front of the villa with its views down over the olive groves and a glimpse of the sea through the Oleanders. Unfortunately being October the weather for the first few days was very stormy so it was a few days before we got in it but once the weather picked up we were in it several times a day. Bliss!
You do need to hire a car to stay here and I was a little nervous about driving on strange roads on the wrong side! However the traffic - in October anyhow - was virtually non existent and whilst some of the roads are pretty hairy, the signposting is generally good so we managed to find our way around with few problems. It is just 10 minutes drive down into Lixouri and is ideally situated for exploring both the Paliki Peninsula and the rest of the island. It is an amazing island to explore - we loved just heading off down a road signposted "beach" and finding some really beautiful coves, usually down really winding roads, often seeing more goats than people!
Our favourite place was no doubt Spaggia's bar at Vatsa beach. A 10 - 15 min drive from the villa it is worth a visit whatever the weather. Run by Spyros - a lovely friendly guy - the food, mainly fresh fish cooked on a wood barbeque was some of the best we tasted all week.
In summary, this is not somewhere you come to if you want wild nightlife and bright lights - any time of year - but especially not in October when many bars and restaurants on the beaches and in the towns are closed, but we absolutely loved the peace, the beauty and the friendliness of the people we met and can't wait to come back and stay here again!
