The Ionian Islands region
Kefalonia is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled of all of the Greek islands. There is a varied selection of good walks - up in the mountains, and along the coast. The mountains attract many birds - Golden Eagles, hoopoes, Kestrels and warblers. The mountain villages are colourful and sleepy, with excellent views from Mount Aenos through the thick pine forests to the landscape below, with vines, lavender, corn and olive trees and clusters of orange and lemon groves. Kefalonia has a spectacular coastline which is dotted with golden sandy beaches and charming fishing villages. There are ferries and countless boats which sail daily to the neighbouring islands of Zakynthos and Ithaca, and to some of the even smaller islands.
You will find a good selection of guide books, maps and information at Olive Grove, with lots of ideas for days out, and where to dine. The island has an excellent selection of very good taverna's and restaurants, serving fresh local and international dishes, and you will find the islanders very friendly, genuine and hospitable.
Korianna is a tiny unspoiled traditional Greek village. Close to the villa (0.5 KM) are good local restaurants, 2 grocery stores, and 3 beaches are within a 5 - 10 minute drive. The capital Argostoli is 20 minutes away by car. Here you will find bustling fresh fruit and fish markets on the quayside. There are some excellent grocers and bakery shops too. There are plenty of taverna's, cafes and restaurants to choose from, and it's home to an array of bijou boutiques, jewelers and craft shops. Further afield are Venetian fortresses and monasteries, Byzantine churches, underground Mycean tombs, and the remains of a Roman villa, dating back to 1200BC. Visit the under-ground lakes and caves, or take a wine tour up into the beautiful mountains, and sample some of the fruity Robola wines.
