The Ionian Islands region
Situated on the western side of mainland Greece the Island of Kefalonia is the largest Island in the Ionian Sea. It is about 350 square miles in area and has a population of roughly 45,000.
While Corfu to the north, and Zakynthos to the south, have a reputation as popular 'party' islands, Kefalonia retains an aura of authenticity and is most suited to visitors able to appreciate the difference. You might find a café serving English food but Kefalonia remains a McDonalds-free zone. Greek food has a high reputation and Kefalonia, being very popular with Greek visitors, offers the traditional favourites as well as tasty local specialties such as kreatopita (Kefalonia Meat Pie). Greek wine complements Greek cuisine perfectly and Robola, a dry white wine unique to Kefalonia, has such a good reputation among wine connoisseurs that it's exported around the world. Much less known is the rather good red wine produced on the Palliki peninsular. Both available very inexpensively 'from the barrel' with your meal. Enjoy!
Argostoli, the capital of the island, takes about 20 minutes by car from Villa Karala and offers a cosmopolitan atmosphere with many good restaurants and bars.
A predominantly green island the main natural tourist attractions on Kefalonia are Drongarati Caves and Mellisani Lake. The lake needs to be seen at midday to appreciate the natural sun light whilst you are being rowed along. We seriously suggest you explore the island. Definitely places to see are Assos and on the way take a look at Myrtos Beach, apparently the seventh most photographed beach in the world. Another beach worth seeing from afar is Anti Samos, near Sami. It's one of the beaches featured in the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin. Fiskardo, is the main yacht haven at the northern end of the island. Its the only place that has many pre 1953 earthquake buildings remaining and well worth a trip. Another location worth a visit and nearer home - St Georges castle is clearly visible during the day and lit up at night.
There is only a small mini market in Kleismata. The main supermarkets are an easy 15 minute drive from the Villa. There is a taverna in Kleismata however within a 10 minute drive there is a choice of four other tavernas.
