Villa Panorama
£1405–£2685 / week
About the home
High on the hillside above the lovely town of Argostoli with uninterrupted views across the sound to the Lixouri Peninsular, lies Villa Panorama, less than a 5 min downhill drive to the cosmopolitan waterfront. Yet the hustle and bustle of the town could be a world away from the surrounding garden and terraces with its sparkling deck level pool. This lovely Villa with its distinctive patrician, modern/classic Greek décor is well designed and exceptionally comfortable with all three bedrooms having sea view private balconies and ensuite bath/shower rooms.
The living area, to the right of the entrance hall, has comfortable sofas, fireplace, satellite TV and DVD and patio doors to a covered dining terrace by the pool. To the left of the entrance hall, the well designed and equipped kitchen/dining room has a side door to the terrace – convenient when cooking on the nearby barbecue. Also on the ground floor is a twin bedroom with its own private sea view balcony and a shower room.
On the first floor, the twin bedroom with ensuite shower room has two private balconies. The first, with sea views towards Argostoli, is warmed by the morning sun whilst the second, with views over the bay to the Lixouri Peninsular, has glorious sunset views. There is also a double bedroom with ensuite bathroom on the first floor and patio doors onto a private balcony with a sweeping view of the bay, where cruise ships often anchor at night with their twinkling lights reflected in the water.
The pool terrace has a shaded dining area, ideal for a lazy lunch, evening aperitif or al fresco dinner under the stars. The swimming pool itself has views onto a magnificent mountain and seascape.
Kefalonia the largest of the Ionian Islands, is still relatively small and you can get just about anywhere on the island in less than an hour from Argostoli so this Villa is particularly highly recommended as a starting point for exploring the island. There's no need to travel far though as some of the best beaches on the island – Makri-Yialos and Plati-Yialos are no more than a 5 min drive away. The smaller beach at Gradakia, which is just visible from the Villa, is even closer. At the end of the day, returning for a barbecue, enjoying the sunsets or dropping down to Argostoli for an evening meal on the waterfront will be a guaranteed daily pleasure - that's if you haven't decided to stay 'at home' to enjoy your lovely surroundings.

The Ionian Islands region

The Ionian island of Kefalonia or Cephalonia is situated in the southern Ionian sea just north of Zakynthos and below the island of Lefkada, and although Kefalonia is the largest of all the Ionian islands it retains a small-island feel. The good quality roads are easy to tackle and largely free of traffic, which is refreshing on an island of this size. Its size also means there is plenty to explore, especially the long coastline which offers everything from long sandy beaches to small sandy bays and shingle beaches surrounded by olive groves or cypress woods.
The Kefalonia / Lassi area
While Kefalonia’s coastline is spectacular at every turn, the interior has much to offer as well, with a number of national parks and some wonderful forest areas and high mountains. There are also abandoned castles, goats with gold teeth, dragon caves and underground lakes! And the island is steeped in mythology and history. The most notable event of recent times, the 1953 earthquake, caused serious devastation in many parts of the island but it also resulted in some important modernisation, including the rebuilding of the island’s infrastructure. A further consequence was that all development on the island since 1953 has been required to meet very high standards of design and construction. So all the new villas on Kefalonia have been built to high specifications and fit in well with the other buildings in the local communities. This is as true of an area like Fiscardo in the north, with its old houses and pre-53 buildings, as of more modern areas like Sami, Lassi, Argostoli (the capital) or Spartia further south.
But it is the people of Kefalonia who make this island the relaxing and welcoming destination it is. Since their island is not overrun by tourists, the Kefalonians still see the tourist as a visitor and remain very helpful and friendly. Courteous and hospitable, they will often invite visitors back to their homes, hoping that they will love their island as much as themselves and will carry back the fondest memories of their visit when the time comes to leave.
Kefalonia is also known for its rich and varied artistic heritage, which has absorbed influences from all the occupying cultures and empires which have claimed Kefalonia over the centuries. Many Greek musicians, artists and sculptors hail from the island, as well as writers and designers, and this lively cultural interest is reflected in the many festivals and other regular artistic events throughout the year.
While all Greek islands have their own character, many of the larger ones have regrettably lost much of their individuality and become mass tourist destinations. Kefalonia is a complete exception to this. It may be large in size but it has the character and feel of an island much smaller, its pace of life still gentle and unhurried and its people still keen to welcome visitors and help them to enjoy the beauty and relaxation of their Ionian paradise.
