The Ionian Islands region
Karavados is only a 25 min drive from the capital Argostoli. There are some local shops where you can buy bread, milk and other 'basics' - the supermarket is about a 5 minute drive. There are two small beaches with umbrellas and sun beds that can be hired for a few Euros + a taverna selling cold drinks, ice cream and snacks for lunch and the catch-of-the-day, BBQ to order by night. There are some great walks around the villa with the most unusual rock formations on the opposite side to the beach, great for rock-pooling or just taking a stroll. If walking is not your thing, lie back under the towering visual of Mount Enos, equally spectacular by day or night.
The island has its own airport with airport code being "EFL", direct flights during the main summer season May to October from Gatwick, Luton, Bristol, Manchester, Cardiff, Birmingham, Newcastle and Glasgow (time flight is approximately 3 hours and 15 mins). Have a look at these sites: www.flythomascook.com, www.flydeals.co.uk, www.airflights.co.uk, www.a1travel.co.uk, www.xl.com.
Daily flights from Athens to Kefalonia (time flight is 45 mins). Have a look at these sites: www.ageanair.com, www.olympicair.com, www.easyjet.com.
There are always taxis available and the transfer time is 20 mins (the cost does not exceed 30 euros).
There are all international car rental offices (Avis, Europcar, Hertz)as well as local car rental office (www.kefalonia-rentacar.com) or the one i always use www.expresstentacar.gr which we have always found to be very reliable.
Kefalonia is also accessible by ferry from Patras to Sami, by ferry from Kylini to Poros, by ferry from Zante to Pessada, by ferry from Lefkas to Fiskardo.
The Kefalonia / St.Thomas Karavados area
No island in Greece offers the same feeling as Kefalonia and no matter how close they may lie, Kefalonia stands alone as a unique holiday experience. Kefalonia even has its own following of holiday devotees who love the island so much that they return year on year.
The islands scenery is so different to that of the other Greek islands, even though Corfu and Zante are so close neither manages to afford the same lush ambiance of the beautiful Kefalonia. Lush green fir-capped mountains reach high up into the clear sunny sky, picturesque headlands, watery inlets, golden bays and fantastic beaches spread around the island.
The island’s people are fantasitc, known for their friendly banter and raw sense of humour, while the island may have a relaxed atmosphere its people are forward thinking and manage to weave the old ways into modern culture. Kefalonia is far from old fashioned as has some of the most trendy apartments, hotels and beaches in the Ionian islands!
Kefalonia was devastated by an earthquake in 1953 which has given rise to a new modern island, reborn from the ruins with new buildings and a new style that is wonderful, especially when complimented by the beautiful weather and clear blue sea’s that encompas the island.
Tourism in kefalonia is still in its infancy, most of the resorts are comparatively small however the services are in place to make both the night and day of your holiday a wonderful experience.
The food in Kefalonia is typically Greek although all resorts have a large choice of food to suit everyone. The food on the island is generally high quality as the Ioanian people enjoy good food and meal times are often the highlight of the day. The island is also well stocked with drink, with many brands available from locally produced beer and wine to imported national brands.
If you fancy a trip during your holiday Kefalonia has a sister island Ithaka which is just a short boat trip away, however kefalonia has plenty to see and do, if you are interested in seeing the sights Kefalonia has to offer why not click through to our interesting sights page. If you had to pick just 2 things to see during your visit we would suggest the underground lake at Melissania cave and the stunning Myrtos beach as both are wonderful sights.

We spent two awesome weeks in this breathtaking villa. When we weren't exploring the rest of Kefalonia, we spent our time lounging by the gorgeous pool or chilling on the balcony indulging in the beautiful view, or having barbecue! The kids had a really good time as well, swimming in pool or playing on the grass. Bedrooms are big and bright and nicely furnished, bathrooms are modern and spacious, kitchen and utility room very well equipped. The whole property is very clean and amazingly well kept - the cleaning service was very good. Walking distance from the villa is a small, nice beach. Property is conveniently located, close to the roads that lead to east, west and north parts of the island. The mountain Ainos is near by and very well worth visiting; the new road takes you almost to the summit. The views are breathtaking.
The owners are really nice and friendly, helpful and easy to communicate with. We didn't lack anything. We only wish we could stay longer. Actually, we wish the villa was ours!
We hope we will be visiting again soon. Thank you Sharon and Leigh for making our Kefalonian experience fantastic!
