Villa Xenia - 246
House | 2 bedrooms | sleeps 4
At Freelance we admit to having a penchant for the unorthodox and so our delight on finding this little gem, radiating atmosphere and charm, was manifest. If you, like us, really appreciate character properties then you will have to look hard on Kefalonia to find its equal. In a very convenient position, amongst the last few houses on the edge of Lakithra village, its just a short walk from a couple of tavernas and a Mini market.. The best thing (although not for the waistline) is the little bakers just opposite selling fresh bread and spinach or cheese pies amongst other delights. The stone path which leads to the main entrance is lined with hibiscus and takes you past the 8m x 4m pool and lovely garden with trees, lawn and flowers.
Purple bougainvillea arching over the entrance welcomes you into the open plan living room, decorated with many family pieces that Frosso, the owner, has had passed down to her from her grandparents. A heavy solid wooden sofa and chairs are grouped around the fireplace with a TV and DVD player. The compact kitchen, equipped with all the necessities of a modern age is separated from the living area by a breakfast bar and curiously rather charming, hand made wooden screen. Nearby is the family sized dining table. Large windows bring an abundance of light into the living room supplemented by French doors which lead to a paved covered dining terrace at the back of the villa with views to the sea and furnished with table and chairs. In the sleeping area off the living room are two bedrooms, one twin and one double plus a bathroom. The double bedroom has been furnished with Frossos iron double bedstead which is an heirloom and over 100 years old (the mattress is not the original!) as well as her antique dresser.A further covered terrace and a pleasant spot to breakfast, is at the front of the house with cushioned cane seating looking out over the pool towards the mountain ridges of Moun tAenos.
This is a top notch location for taking in the whole island, with the island capital, Argostoli just a 10 mins drive or an inexpensive return taxi trip. Within a 10 min drive are a number of beaches, including Makris Yialos, Avithos and Lourdas. Almost on your doorstep, there's a choice of tavernas and a minimarket in the village of Lakithra.Villa Xenia is just perfect for couples and small families, although set back from the village road with gardens & olive trees in between, some road noise will be heard, aroma of baking fresh bread will be experienced most mornings in the garden.

The Ionian Islands region
Sitting off the west coast of Greece, Kefalonia is the largest of this group of the Ionian Islands. From its highest mountain, surrounded by a natural park where wild horse live, to it`s 250kms of coastline, where loggerhead turtles come to nest; Kefalonia is a natural wonderland, full of suprises. There are underground lakes, limestone caves, and of course many Beaches. Many of the longer sandy south and east coast now offer all the facilities that add to a holiday but with no building over 3 stories allowed tourism has been contained, maintaining a pleasant laid back atmosphere. There are many smaller undeveloped bays and little fishing harbours waiting to be discovered.
Lakithra is one of a network of small villages and hamlets strung along a hillside clothed in olive and lemon trees overlooking the west coast. Not just a tourist village, although there are a couple of small hotels and a few villas but home to many and thus a thriving village. It's just a ten minute drive into Argostoli, so an evening in the island capital, strolling along the waterfront, shopping or enjoying a meal at one of the many tavernas in its wide tree lined streets can be followed by a short return taxi ride.
You'll more than likely fall into the daily routine of making a visit to the baker in the mornings, packing up a picnic and heading off for the day as there's no shortage of tempting sandy beaches within a few minutes drive of the village. The long stretches of sand at Makri-Gialos and Plati-Gialos, near Argostoli, well supplied with sun beds and the quieter beaches of Ammes and Ai Helis are all within a few minutes drive. It's a similar distance to pretty Avithos beach from where, if you choose, you can walk over the rocky headland to little Megalipetra where a picnic is essential as there's no taverna but you can leave your swimming costume at home. Within 10 mins drive is pretty Lourdas.
There's hardly a better location for exploring the island and Fiscardo in the north and Sami on the east coast make ideal day trips. If on the other hand all you really want to do is park up the car, enjoy your pool, your villa, the views and the sunsets then in Lakithra itself, as well as the bakery, you'll find a couple of tavernas and minimarkets.
