Lourdas Thea Houses, Lourdas, Kefalonia
Above the village of Lourdas, this exclusive group of six one bedroom houses, each has its own small garden enclosed by green hedges opening to a lovely barbecue area and a shared swimming pool. The fully air conditioned houses all have slightly different layouts, but they all have in common a wonderful sea views from the first floor balcony so the open plan living rooms are on the upper floors, with neat little kitchen areas, equipped with full electric cooker and large fridge freezers and a tidy run of cupboards and granite work tops. Theres a dining table and a bright living room with a fireplace, satellite TV and cushioned sofa. French doors open onto a first floor balcony with amazing sea views.
On the ground floor is a prettily decorated double bedroom, with plenty of wardrobe space. French doors open onto a covered balcony with table and chairs and steps down to a lawn, hedged all around for a little privacy. Each house has a shower room and a bathroom, one on each floor and a washing machine. They are looked after, with great attention to detail, by the welcoming Teri who lives nearby and takes great pride, not only in her houses, but also her kitchen, over by the pool. Mother-in-law does all the cooking at home, so this is her outlet for her quite excellent and erstwhile unplumbed culinary depths. Here she offers breakfast to those guests who find the walk up the road to the baker, just too much trouble. Served with breakfast, is bread fresh daily, from the local baker, and her homemade preserves. A warning here, she bakes pretty good cakes too, and a slice is very pleasant with a glass of cordial in the afternoon Self-catering is very easy with a baker and minimarket close at hand.
For eating out there are a couple of tavernas within 10 min walking distance in the village of Vlachata. Lourdas Village itself is just a 5 mins drive down the hill and the sandy beach at Lourdas is a few minutes more.

The Ionian Islands region
Sitting off the west coast of Greece, Kefalonia is the largest of this group of the Ionian Islands. From its highest mountain, surrounded by a natural park where wild horse live, to it`s 250kms of coastline, where loggerhead turtles come to nest; Kefalonia is a natural wonderland, full of suprises. There are underground lakes, limestone caves, and of course many Beaches. Many of the longer sandy south and east coast now offer all the facilities that add to a holiday but with no building over 3 stories allowed tourism has been contained, maintaining a pleasant laid back atmosphere. There are many smaller undeveloped bays and little fishing harbours waiting to be discovered.
It's easy to see why this village, squeezed in amongst the pine trees on the foothills of Mount Aenos and overlooking a beautiful sandy beach has grown of recent years into a select holiday resort. A handful of tavernas offer traditional Greek hospitality and with a few minimarkets and small tourist shops, the scene is set for a relaxed holiday.
The beach below the village, backed by allotments growing a profusion of fruits and vegetables, is long with shallow shelving sand making it ideal for families with small children. Conveniently on the beach a few tavernas serve snacks and drinks throughout the day and make a romantic venue for evening meals with, usually, locally caught fish on the menu served with vegetables from their own allotments.
Along the coast either side of Lourdas itself are several smaller bays and coves, some quite undeveloped with no facilities and ideal for getting away from it all.
Behind the village, Mount Aenos the highest mountain on Kefalonia rises steeply up towards it upper ridges forming a wonderful backdrop and beckoning exploration by car or for the more energetic, by foot.

"Lovely house, lovely island"
Have just returned from a very enjoyable week, at Thea House Lourdas. The accommodation was great with beautiful views to the sea and also across to
Zakynthos. Terri who owned the houses was lovely, and very informative about the island. A few bars and restaurants within walking distance which was great. A car is definitely needed to be able to see as much as possible of this beautiful island. We will be going back.
