Villa Marianna, Lourdas, Kefalonia

On the lower slopes of Mount Aenos with stunning views over the sparkling Ionian Sea as far as the lesser island of Zakynthos in the distance, Villa Marianna sits beside olive groves close to the outer limits of the village of Lourdata. We have had very positive feedback from guests staying here and feel it is destined to become a firm favourite for couples and small families. The delightful owner of Villa Marianna, Hariklia, may well pop in with a friendly smile and a cake during your stay as she is particularly keen to makes guests feel immediately at home, a sentiment reflected in the decor of her lovely Villa.

Decorated in calming pastel shades, the living area is comfortably furnished with the sofa and high backed chair well placed to take full advantage of the sea views from the French doors, there`s also a satelite TV. At the other end of the open plan room, the prettily finished kitchen is well equipped with large fridge freezer, oven with ceramic hob and dishwasher and a window with views over a neighbouring olive grove with a polished wood dining table nearby. An alternative, and probably favoured, dining area is a covered terrace with wood table and chairs, accessed by French doors. There is a guest WC on the ground floor. The double and twin bedrooms on the first floor both have ensuite bathrooms (small baths, with shower attachments) and the twin beds can be made up as a double on request. Each bedroom has a private balcony with views worth getting up for in the morning, of sparkling seascapes and pine clad mountainsides.

The focus of any holiday in Lourdas is undoubtedly on outside living and so, where to put the sunbeds will become a major decision of the day. From the covered balcony off the living room, steps lead down to a paved sun terrace and the lower pool terrace with the lovely, roman step entry, 7m x 4 m swimming pool (depth 1.20 x 1.70). A lawn beside the pool is enclosed by a sweet smelling tangle of flowering and climbing shrubs, which clamber on around the Villas grounds. A purpose built barbecue area by the dining terrace has a sink and clay oven under the shining leaves of a row of banana trees. There is washing machine in a laundry room in the basement. There is a minimarket and a choice of tavernas within easy walking distance and Lourdas beach and its waterside tavernas are a little less than 2 kilometers away.

The Ionian Islands region

Sitting off the west coast of Greece, Kefalonia is the largest of this group of the Ionian Islands. From its highest mountain, surrounded by a natural park where wild horse live, to it`s 250kms of coastline, where loggerhead turtles come to nest; Kefalonia is a natural wonderland, full of suprises. There are underground lakes, limestone caves, and of course many Beaches. Many of the longer sandy south and east coast now offer all the facilities that add to a holiday but with no building over 3 stories allowed tourism has been contained, maintaining a pleasant laid back atmosphere. There are many smaller undeveloped bays and little fishing harbours waiting to be discovered.

Kefalonia

Lourdas, Kefalonia

It's easy to see why this village, squeezed in amongst the pine trees on the foothills of Mount Aenos and overlooking a beautiful sandy beach has grown of recent years into a select holiday resort. A handful of tavernas offer traditional Greek hospitality and with a few minimarkets and small tourist shops, the scene is set for a relaxed holiday.

The beach below the village, backed by allotments growing a profusion of fruits and vegetables, is long with shallow shelving sand making it ideal for families with small children. Conveniently on the beach a few tavernas serve snacks and drinks throughout the day and make a romantic venue for evening meals with, usually, locally caught fish on the menu served with vegetables from their own allotments.

Along the coast either side of Lourdas itself are several smaller bays and coves, some quite undeveloped with no facilities and ideal for getting away from it all.

Behind the village, Mount Aenos the highest mountain on Kefalonia rises steeply up towards it upper ridges forming a wonderful backdrop and beckoning exploration by car or for the more energetic, by foot.

"Our idea of heaven"

We had a wonderful week staying at the Villa Marianna. The owners, Hariklia & Dionysos keep it so clean - we felt really comfortable. Hariklia made us feel so welcome. Nothing was too much trouble for… More
