The Ionian Islands region

The island is covered by dense vegetation and offers a great range of natural beauty, including beaches and spectacular caves. Perhaps the best known appearance of Kefalonia in popular culture is in the novel Captain Corelli's Mandolin, by English author Louis de Bernières. Kefalonia is well known for its endangered loggerhead turtle population which nest at Kaminia beach under the watchful protection of the Sea Turtle Protection society. From archaeological point of view Kefalonia is an extremely interesting island. Archaeological findings go back to 40,000 BP. The archaeological museum in Kefalonia’s capital Argostoli – although small – is regarded as the most important museum in Greece for its exhibits from this era. Kefalonia weather consists in a mild Mediterranean climate with rainy winters and dry, hot summers, like the other Ionian Islands. This is why Kefalonia has a dense and verdant vegetation, plenty of forests and fertile plains. Winds in Kefalonia never get very strong, even during summer time. The wonderful beaches of Kefalonia are famous in Greece for their extreme and unspoiled natural beauty. They all have fine golden or white sand and magnificent emerald waters.
The Kefalonia / Katelios area
Katelios is a lovely sand beach to the East of Mounda between Skala and Lourda with a gentle slope to the sea making it shallow and ideal for a family vacation.
The back of the beach is covered by lush green hills with not much tourist resorts, as building is not allowed thanks to the EU Nature 2000 project. A couple of nice beachfront cafes and taverns are near the waterfront road at the back while a few parasols and chairs have been set on sand.
You can stroll along the shaded pavements to the tiny fishing village of Katelios and its olive and citrus groves in the valley. There is a mini-market and restaurant by the beach with fresh fish dishes. In summer months dancing and barbeques are arranged in these restaurants. Also visit the historical sights of the bell tower of St. Andrew, the St. George castle, the Mycenaean tombs and the roman water mills.
Visit nearby Skala which is the largest resort of the southern part of Kefalonia. Enjoy the large sandy beach of the village and its crystalline waters boarded by pine trees; this beach also offers sun beds rentals and water sports facilities.
In Skala, visitors will find many restaurants, taverns, cafes, shops and accommodation, mostly gathered on the main street of the village. On the edge of the village remain some interesting ruins of a Roman villa where a magnificent mosaic floor can still be admired.

Beautifull villa with a very large pool. There is a spectacular, uninterrupted view on Zakynthos from almost every part of the grounds. Car is necessary. We had a great time!!! Also because we could ask Catherine for almost anything, nothing was too much for her...thanks again :) |
