The Ionian Islands region

Among the 3000 or so inhabited islands of Greece, there is a small group of seven, known as the Ionian Islands, located just off the western side of the Greek mainland.

It is not surprising that one of the world's most enduring and romantic epic stories, Homer's Iliad, is centred on these captivating landscapes of rugged mountains, green hills and the ever present turquoise waters of the Ionian Sea.

Over the centuries these islands have developed their own culture and identity, partly through their periodic occupation by foreign powers such as the Venetians, the Turks and the British, but also as a result of their rich natural environment and the intimate association of their inhabitants to the land and the surrounding sea.

Each island is unique unto itself, varying not only form the rest of Greece but from its neighbours.

Kefalonia

Kefalonia has for many years been hidden from the tourist map until the film Captain Corelli's Mandolin suddenly brought the spectacular beauty of the island to everyone's attention.

Although the island has its own airport and visitor numbers are increasing Kefalonia still has that authentic Greek charm that other islands have long lost.

Villa Eirene is based in the south east corner of the island but being a small island all parts are easily accessible so head into Argostoli and go shopping in 30 minutes or an underground boat ride on the lake at Melissani. Head to the north and you'll find celebrities and the very wealthy anchoring in the bay at Fisicardo.

Sample the delights of the islands own wineries especially the Gentilini winery close to the airport. Enjoy Gyros (a local type of kebab) on the waterfront in Argostoli or simply laze away on a beach and top up the tan. Kefalonia caters for all.
