Enquire nowThe Ionian Islands region
The islands were settled by Greeks at an early date, possibly as early as 1200 BC, and certainly by the 9th century BC.
Today all the islands are part of the Greek periphery of Ionian Islands (Ionioi Nisoi), except Kythera, which is part of the periphery of Attiki. Kerkyra has a population of 113,479 (including Paxoi), Zakynthos 38,680, Kefallonia 39,579 (including Ithaca), Lefkada 22,536, Ithaki 3,052, Kythera 3,000 and Paxi 2,438.
In recent decades the islands have lost much of their population through emigration and the decline of their traditional industries, fishing and marginal agriculture. Today their major industry is tourism. Specifically Kerkyra, with its harbour, scenery and wealth of ruins and castles, is a favourite stopping place for cruise liners. British tourists in particular are attracted through having read Gerald Durrell's evocative book My Family and Other Animals (1956), which describes his childhood on Kerkyra in the 1930s. The novel and movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin is set in Kefallonia.
Kefalonia climate : -
The Greek island of Kefalonia enjoys long hot summers with plenty of sunshine, together with mild wet winters. The largest of the Ionian islands, Kefalonia experiences a typically Mediterranean climate, with high temperatures during the summer months and plenty of rainfall throughout the low season.
Climate of Kefalonia - Long hot summers, with little wind
Spring in Kefalonia sees temperatures of between 15C and 18C, with relatively dry days and around 7 or 8 hours of sunshine a day. Swimming in the sea is possible, and the pleasant weather during these months is ideal for sightseeing and walking holidays. June and July sees the temperatures rising to 23C - 26C, and frequently reaching 30C. With no rain and the sun shining for up to 12 hours of sun a day, the weather during the summer season is very reliable, making the island the perfect spot for a beach holiday. Temperatures remain high during the summer, as the island sees little winds to temper the heat.
Kefalonia climate - Mild wet winters, keeping the island green
The autumn months bring the likelihood of rain, although the weather remains warm and the sun still shines between 7 and 9 hours a day. Temperatures drop to 22C in September and 18C in October, and the climate is much more comfortable. Winters remain mild, with temperatures reaching lows of 9C, and plenty of rain expected throughout the season. This abundant rainfall, so typical of the Ionian islands, is integral in helping to maintain Kefalonias' lush green landscape.
The Kefalonia / Skala area
Skala Kefalonia: Skala is a coastal village which lies on the south-eastern tip of Kefalonia at 37 kilometres from the island’s capital and 12 kilometres from Poros.
This village was built after the earthquake of 1953 when the older village, which was standing just behind the new village, was completely destroyed; the ruins of “Old Skala” can still be seen today.
Being the largest resort of the southern part of Kefalonia, Skala is a popular spot to visit in the summer, come to enjoy the large sandy beach of the village and its crystalline waters boarded by pine trees; this beach also offers sun beds rentals and water sports facilities.
The Greek village's main attraction is its long expanse of fine shingle and sand, gently shelving into the sea, with isolated coves in the surrounding area. There is a small high street 100 yards from the beach with shops and tavernas and streets branching off. Along the coast, Potamaki Beach is a haven for the rare loggerhead turtles, and this has now been declared a conservation area. Night-time 'turtle watches' are organised for those who wish to observe the creatures without threatening their survival.
Historic sites include ruins of Roman buildings with lovely mosaics. A mile out of town archaeologists discovered a 7th century BC temple of Apollo, parts of which can be seen in the Argostoli museum. The 5-mile walk along the coast path to Poros is popular.
In Skala, visitors will find many restaurants, taverns, cafes and shops mostly gathered on the main street of the village. On the edge of the village remain some interesting ruins of a Roman villa where a magnificent mosaic floor can still be admired.
The novel and movie Captain Corelli's Mandolin is set in Kefallonia.

A lovely location, but the villa does not live up to its description or potential. Door netting was broken. Bathrooms were in need of attention, eg sink plug not working, grills broken. The aquajets did not work in the pool. Air-con variable (eg remotes not working). The TV did not work – it had no satellite signal. The kitchen had basic utensils only. The downstairs bathroom was not accessible – we discovered a key on the last day and when we got in we discovered the room was being used as a storeroom anyway. The worse thing was no contact information in the villa at all – this proved to be very problematic (the ownership of Villa Emellisse seems very obscure). The furnishings are getting a bit shabby, and the place is looking very tired and worn and badly in need of some TLC. What a lovely Island Kefalonia is though, and what a wonderful time we had there. Go to Kef, but try one of the other villas in the area – they seemed nicer than this one. Oh, and don't expect your security deposit back in a hurry – you will have to fight for it. |

The villa was lovely and clean but in need of some decorating and DIY as grills on floor in the bathrooms were broken and just general touching up here and there compared to the other villas in the vacinity it looked a little 'tired' also the "garden" left a lot to be desired! Maybe the goats should have been let in to munch away for a day or two! The pool was advertised with hydrotherapy jets, which unfortunately weren't working at all and neither was the pool pump five days into our ten day stay. My husband had to maintain it by filling from the hose everyday and skimming off the ever increasing amounts of debris. We never saw the rep which would have been nice, the pool was looked at several times but not fixed whilst we were there. The view was amazing though and the weather beautiful and hot. Kefalonia is a lovelyisland and Skala is full of nice places to eat. Would go back but maybe not to this villa. We were a little disappointed to say the least, at being accusedof leaving the gate open on our departure, resulting in the goats causing damage to the pool area and garden hence the delay in returning our security deposit. We definiately shut the gate and eventually got refunded the full amount. Very very disappointed in the accusation though. |
