The Crete region
Crete is the largest of the Greek islands at 8,336 km² and the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean. Crete is a location a popular tourist destination and has a significant ancient history. Its attractions include the Minoan sites of Knossos and Phaistos, the classical site of Gortys, the Venetian castle at Rethymno, and the Samaria Gorge, as well as many other natural sites, monuments, and beaches.
Crete was the centre of the Minoan civilization (ca. 2600–1400 BC), the oldest form of Greek and hence European civilization.
Crete straddles two climatic zones, the Mediterranean and the North African, mainly falling within the former ,as such, the climate in Crete is primarily temperate. The atmosphere can be quite humid, depending on the proximity to the sea, while winter is fairly mild. Snowfall is common on the mountains between November and May, but rare at the low lying areas - especially near the coast when it only stays on the ground for a few minutes/hours. During the Cretan summer, average temperatures reach the high 20s-low 30s (Celsius), occasionally touching the upper 30s to mid 40s.
The south coast, including the Messara plain and Asterousia mountains, falls in the North African climatic zone, and thus enjoys significantly more sunny days and high temperatures throughout the year. In southern Crete date palms bear fruit and swallows remain year-long.
Kefalas, Crete area

The lovely village of Almirida is 15 minutes away and is built around a pretty crescent shaped sandy beach with a small fishing harbour. The beach is very shallow and safe, is lined by a large variety of tavernas, cafés and shops, and has a water sports centre. The town of Georgiopoli with its beautiful 9km sandy beach is also only 5km drive to the south.
A variety of archaeological sites and traditional villages are close by with an interesting selection of small craft centres and museums, including glass blowing, lace making, and silk making. For those looking for even more activity, the historic town of Chania is only 35 minutes away.

Guestbook for Almiros View
"The villa is very spacious with its three bedrooms and has a stunning view of the sea from the first floor terrace. We found it very quiet and relaxing in the week we were there. It was a pleasure to deal with the owner and everything went very smoothly. I would recommend it to anyone who wishes a great place in a quiet and sunny village, away from the noise of everyday life." - Cristiano, London.
"We had an absolutely fabulous week in Crete. We loved the villa & pool - plenty of room for us all - 2 adults & 2 teenagers - beautifully furnished & well-equipped - (it was great having a dishwasher as we cooked for ourselves a few times!) The upstairs balcony & the view from the bedrooms was fantastic - especially the moon over the bay. You must be very proud of it. We also appreciated the village & friendliness of your neighbour. Many, many thanks." - Tim & Amanda, Worchestershire.
"We had a very nice stay in Almiros View. The villa has everything you may need. You have different options all over the area (Kefalas itself, Vamos, ...and Chania) for minimarkets and supermarkets. The surroundings are very nice and the location is very convenient if you like to make short trips to explore the western part of the island (almost equidistant from Chania and Rethymnon) or simply go to beach" - Jose, Spain.
"This villa is in the midst of the real crete, an opportunity that we would have no doubt have missed if we had booked through the usual channels of booking a break. Our drive to the villa in Kefalas was magnificent, and I remember thinking that if the rest of the stay was going to be anything like this then we were in for an unforgetable time. It was our five year old son's first time abroad and the villa was spot on. The pool was perfect with it's toddler area. The villa was very clean and safe and spacious and we felt at home during the week we spent there. The balcony was a welcome feature at night after our son had gone to sleep, we were able to watch the sun go down with a glass of rose. The area was beautifully calm and quiet. The local restaurants were warm and friendly . We often drove to Georgioupolis to use a quiet beach there that was tucked away behind the left side of the harbour and ate at the restaurants there that felt like you were eating in the garden of eden. Overall the dining out was very cheap and good value. In general we felt like we were in a bygone age where old men in flat caps sit outside flowered tavernas playing cards at their leisure only with the added attraction of the modernity of our villa to keep us in this decade. A real gem of a place. We are really glad we picked this villa out of many others and would recommend it if you want to go to sleep thinking of that pretty village and white mountains as we still do now some many weeks later, and probably forever. Thanks Martin". - Sarah, London.
