The Ionian Islands region
We are in the middle of the Mediterranean. The islands of the Ionian Sea stretch along the western coast of the central part of the Greek mainland and further to the south along the western coast of Peloponnesus. They constitute an independent group of seven small and large islands with their own special character.
One of the islands of Ionian Sea is Lefkada, “the white island”, located between Corfu and Kephalonia. Probably owes its name to the steep white rocks of its southern promontory Lefkatas, or to its snow-white dreamlike beaches. The climate is mediterranean and the weather mild. This island is widely known for its award winning beaches (Porto Katsiki, Egkremni, Mylos, Kathisma), the unrivalled emerald beaches with their distinctive sand that resembles in colour ''the egg of a dove'', in the words of the island's great poet, Angelos Sikelianos.
Lefkada is inhabited since the ancient times. It was here where Homer set some sections of his poems and it was from Lefkatas, where the temple of Apollo stood, that the poetess Sappho (“the 10th Muse”) is said to have leapt to her death, driven to suicide by her unhappy love for Phaon. In cultural terms, Lefkada is one of the most dynamic areas in Greece. Many Lefkadians have distinguished themselves in the fields of literature, art and sciences. Greece's ''national poets'' Valaoritis and Sikelianos were born, lived and worked in Lefkada. Lefkadios Hern also, born in Lefkada, became the ''national poet'' of Japan!
The island's capital is the town of Lefkada, with its characteristic multi-coloured timber-framed buildings, and its unique lagoon, home to rare species of birds, and protected by the “Ramsar” Convention. It is also protected by the Ministry of Culture, which has declared its shore a site of outstanding natural beauty.
The charm of Lefkada is complemented by the smaller islands which surround it: Skorpios, once the property of the shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis, and beyond it Madouri, the island of the poet Aristotle Valaoritis, Skorpidi, Heloni, Meganissi, Sparti, Kalamos, Kastos and Kythros.
The villas are located right above the seaside village of Nikiana, about 2kms uphill, within lots of greenery and trees, enjoying the peace and quiet of the countryside along with the wonderful, panoramic seaviews.
Nikiana is a pretty little coastal village on the east coast with an abundance of great fish tavernas located on the beachfront and on the picturesque harbor. There are handful of cafes and bars right on the beach, motorboat hire, mountain biking, a dinghy sailing and windsurfing center plus two yacht charter companies. At least 5 mini markets and bakeries can be found on the main road through the village plus a butcher and a pharmacy. The beach is shingle and is perfect for snorkeling. Nikiana is an ideal location for those who wish to be close to everything and at the same time to enjoy a quiet and relaxing holiday in a truly Greek atmosphere.
Lefkas Town, 10 mins drive, is the main commercial center and has the best shopping facilities on the island. There is a quayside road south of the causeway entrance with a busy marina. The High Street runs through the center of town and is also known as the 'Pazari', this is the main street for shopping and cafes. A mid-morning coffee in the square is ideal for a break and a perfect opportunity to see the Lefkadians in 'action'! The architecture has been mainly influenced by the Venetians and the post Byzantine traditions but also by the Turkish and the English. The houses in the main part of the town are two storey buildings, very closely packed, without yards or gardens and with narrow alleyways running between them. It is lovely to walk around the back streets of the town where you are also more likely to see the typical Lefkadian houses wrapped in brightly painted corrugated iron - a form of protection against earthquakes introduced by the English during their rule of the island.
Nidri, 10 mins drive, is the primary holiday resort on Lefkas. There are a variety of tavernas, restaurants and cafes here, also a handful of bars and a couple of nightclubs. The majority of shopping and tourist facilities are on the main street. On the seafront, known as the 'Paralia', you can enjoy a wonderful view of the Pringiponissa islands - amongst which is Scorpios, owned by the Onassis family. Cruises and Ferryboats operate from here to Cephalonia and Ithaca.

"Asteria villa, cant think of a better place to spent summer vacation..."
I stayed at villa Asteria a couple of summers (August 2011, July 2012). It is an amazing villa, built with old village stones, traditional furniture and very comfortable. On the ground floor, is the the kitchen and the living room with a huge television that gets all greek chanels (satellite TV). Though noone really had time for TV with the amazing view from the balkony and the swimming pool practically just a jump away.
Upstairs are the bedrooms, each with its own bathroom, The beds are cover all around with white curtains, a fact that creates an atmosphere from another time. From their balkonies, we prefered to look out to the opposite mountains with the sea beneath them covered in sailing boats.
Finally, the small appartmet at the bottom of the villa, that is made accordingly to the main building, provides a comfortable seperating area from the rest of the house, that gives the opportunity to people that want some privacy to be alone. And of course, it has the great advantage that when you open the door you can jump directly into the pool.

"Ein sehr angenehmer Aufenthalt"
Die Diodati Villas auf Lefkada haben eine wunderbare Aussicht. Vom Swimmingpool sieht man weit auf das ionische Meer hinaus. Die Zimmer sind angenehm komfortabel, schlicht und stilvoll eingerichtet. Die Besitzer sind sehr nett und haben immer ein offenes Ohr für Fragen etc. Alles in Allem sehr zu empfehlen!
