The Paphos District
The Tombs of the Kings This amazing site is a large necropolis lying a little over a mile (two kilometres) north-west of Paphos harbour in Cyprus. Easily found on the main Paphos to Coral Bay road.
The impressive underground tombs, many of which date back to the 4th century BCE, are carved out of the solid rock, and are thought to have been the burial sites of Paphitic aristocrats and high officials up to 3 CE (the name comes from the magnificence of the tombs; no kings were in fact buried here). Some of the tombs feature Doric columns and frescoed walls. Archaeological excavations are still being carried out at the site. The tombs are cut into the native rock, and at times imitated the houses of the living.
Although the tombs have been known and casually explored for centuries, they were first subjected to systematic excavation in the later 1970s and the 1980s.
The Paphos Bird and Animal Park This is a truly magical day out . It is set in beautiful and panoramic 100,000 sq metres of landscaped natural vegetated land that overlooks the Agios Georgios area of Peyia. There are numerous endangered birds and animals, and an interesting variety of rare animals such as the giant 150kg tortoises, giraffes, zebras, deer, antelopes, monkeys, racoons, reptiles, eagles, owls and much more. The newest additions include Meerkats and Red Kangaroos.
The Park’s 400 seated air conditioned amphitheatre has one of the best bird shows in the world, with flying displays, bike riding, roller skating and ‘Rocky’ the green winged macaw driving his car!
The Park is of a high standard, is in a natural environment, and prides itself on the construction of its buildings, which are made from local hand carved stone and timbers. These traditional buildings house a Restaurant, Traditional Cypriot House, Handicraft Shop, Souvenir Shop and Art Gallery. There is also a Snack Bar, Ice-Cream Kiosk, Sponsor Shop and the Children’s Playground is one of the biggest in Cyprus. All surrounded by the enchanting sounds of the bird song, in an environment of lakes, ponds, and waterfalls.
In the Children’s Farm you can get close to the animals (goats, ponies, guinea pigs, rabbits, and pigs) and have your photo taken with parrots, snakes, ponies and Blondie, our friendly Python. You can also have your photo taken whilst feeding the giraffes their favourite treat of carobs.
Pafos Bird and Animal Park is situated 15 km from Paphos and 6km past Coral Bay. Follow the coastal road through Coral Bay/Peyia junction towards St George then follow the Pafos Bird Park indicator signs.
The Park is open 365 days a year and the opening hours are 9am – sunset in the summer months (April-September) and 9am – 5pm in the winter months (October-March).
For further information please check out their website at www.pafosbirdpark.com
Kolossi Castle and Kourion It is also worth visiting Kolossi castle and the ruins at Kourion on the old road towards Limassol. There is also a beautiful long sandy beach at Kourion where there are a number of restaurants where you can almost paddle whilst you are sipping your gin and tonic!
Aphrodite's Rock Is only a few minutes drive away. Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty is said to have emerged from the sea at this spot in 1200 BC. A temple was built 2km inland for worshipping the pagan cult of Aphrodite. Recent excavations have shown that there was an extensive city around the temple.
Kykkos Monastery The monastery was founded by the Byzantines in 1092 and it is dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is now the richest monastery on the island and posesses one of the three surviving icons ascribed to Saint Luke. An interesting journey up and well worth a visit.
Agios Neofytos Monastery Founded in the 12th century, the 'Egkleistra' - an enclosure, is carved out of the mountain by the Cypriot hermit and writer Neofytos. The elaborate iron crowns and silken vestments of Orthodox bishops are among the highlights of this monastery’s museum. Equally fascinating are the frescoes in its cave-like chapel, some of the finest Byzantine frescoes dating from 12th to 15th century.
Adonis Baths & Waterfall The Adonis baths and waterfalls are located in Paphos close to Coral Bay. Located at a two level waterfall the Adonis baths is a beautiful location and is well worth the visit. Near Akoursos/Peyia and very well signposted. More accessible in a 4x4 vehicle. It is a steep climb to reach your destination but a journey that really is well worth it.
The baths themselves are located below a waterfall and there are high cliffs either side with a few trees leaning over the water. Swimming in the Adonis baths is supposed to make women look younger and more beautiful. For men these waters will make them stronger. The waters here are quite deep and excellent for swimming. There are also some rocks which are great for diving from. A couple of swings are also located over the water adding to this attraction and you can swing from these into the refreshing mountain waters below.
After you have spent your time admiring the beauty of the waterfalls and swimming in the Adonis baths you can visit the old mill and fournos (large oven) which is located here. The oven was used in olden days by women hoping to catch a glimpse of their lovers bathing. The old water mill was built over 400 years ago by monks and was used by surrounding villagers to grind their corn.
George's Snake & Reptile Park Visit Snake George's Reptile Park and enlarge your knowledge discovering the exciting world of the reptiles which inhabit Cyprus. See these creatures and learn how to avoid areas that snakes may occupy. The reptile park can be found on the main road past Coral Bay to Agios Georgios and the fee to enter the park is small and is for the upkeep of the reptiles.
