Enquire nowThe Paphos region
Paphos/Pafos is situated on the island's south-west coast and sheltered by the Troodos mountains which provide winter skiing just an hour's drive away. Its old town of narrow streets rests on a cliff about 2km inland overlooking the sea and merges with a newer town of expanding commercial, retail and residential suburbs.
The Paphos area is full of archaeological treasures, so much so that UNESCO has included it in its World Cultural Heritage list. These treasures include extensive mosaics from the Houses of Dionyssos, Theseus and Alon, only recently discovered after 16 centuries beneath the soil and still being excavated to this day. Adjacent to these is the ancient Odeon amphitheatre and ,just a few hundred metres further west, the vast array of underground tombs of the island's ancient kings and rulers.
Other places of interest worth visiting include the harbour which is guarded by a fort built in 1592 AD;
Latsi Bay (Polis); Akamas Peninsula; Aphrodite's Baths; Aphrodite's Birthplace at Petra tou Romiou; Lara Bay turtle sanctuary; Avakas Gorge; St Georgios of Pegeias Isle; Lempa Village;and St Neophytos Monastery.
Its good road connections make Paphos a perfect base from which to visit other parts of the island. Polis on the north-west coast is just 30 minutes drive, Troodos mountains 60 minutes and the capital Nicosia (Lefkosia) about 120 minutes. Pathos International Airport is just 15 km distant via the B6 (currently undergoing upgrading as is the airport itself to provide a new terminal) or slightly longer via the excellent A6 motorway.
The climate in Paphos is hot and dry virtually all year and tempered by frequent and welcome sea breezes. It has 335 days of sunshine with, in the summer months, at least 12 hours of sun each day. Even in winter months, the temperature rarely drops below 15 degrees C during the day. Rainfall is low and limited mostly to winter months when it can be short and sharp, but in the last few years even this has been in short supply.

The Kato Paphos area
Kato Paphos, which means "below Paphos", starts at the base of the town "cliff" and stretches to the sea. It is focussed around a picturesque harbour guarded over by an ancient fort. The harbour is filled with colourful fishing boats and pleasure craft and lined by open-air fish restaurants. This is the place to be on those endless balmy evenings.
Starting at the harbour, which benefits from a large FREE car park, and stretching eastwards for over a kilometre is a seaside promenade lined with shops, restaurants and hotels. The stretch of promenade nearest the harbour has recently undergone a significant facelift involving repaving and the removal of the old sea wall to open up the front and turn it into one of the most attractive and relaxing tourists areas in the whole of Cyprus. Also recently opened is a mosaic pathway running by the sea and connecting the harbour with the Tombs of the Kings area, with plans to extend it all the way to Coral Bay.
THINGS TO DO
There is so much to see and do in Kato Paphos and the surrounding area; many of the World Cultural Heritage sites are here and there are a number of very good museums in the town above.
The west coast coastline varies from sand and pebble beaches (three in Kato Paphos) to secluded coves and rugged cliffs. Coral Bay with its sandy beach and watersports is 15 minutes drive away, and Paphos water park with its many slides and activities for all ages is just 5 minutes drive. At the harbour you can hire a speed boat or take a trip in a glass-bottomed boat.
OR WHY NOT TRY:
Jeep or Quad Bike Safaris;
Karting;
Golf - there are three courses nearby;
Skiing - in the Troodos mountains in winter
Paragliding over the sea;
Walking - there are 48 signed trails covering 200 km throughout the island;
Paphos Aquarium;
Paphos Bird and Animal Park;
Kathikas Donkey Farm;
(Maps and guidebooks can be found in the penthouse for your reference.)
EATING & DRINKING
You will be spoilt for choice here because Kato Paphos has literally hundreds of good eating places to suit all tastes and budgets. Most restaurants have good vegetarian selections, too. Local wine and beer is excellent
and cheap. And if you are self-catering, the Carrefour, Orphanides and Papantiniou supermarkets are first rate, but don't overlook the numerous small but well equipped baker's with their mouth watering pastries.

This is an excellent apartment with modern fittings and is exceptionally well equipped. The owner's description and photos accurately reflect the apartment. Although away from the beach, it is still easily accessible by public transport. I hired a car and there was plenty of public car parks in Pathos harbour area but although convenient, a car is not necessary. One of the big plus points when booking this apartment were the flyscreens to all windows as I am usually bitten but, in common with other reviewers, we saw few insects and had none in the apartment. The apartment was very light and airy and although the temps were in the 30s during the day, we hardly used the aircon system because the apartment was cool if blinds were drawn and the fans utilised. The drinking water system was an added bonus. I would recommend this apartment. |

Penthouse 201 is situated in a residential area, away from the noise of the tourist area at night, but a walk. or short bus ride, takes you to the town when required. (A 7 day unlimited travel ticket was 13 euro in June 2012, and this pass can also be used to visit neighbouring villages/resorts/beaches in the Paphos area.) Our party of 2 adult couples stayed for 2 weeks and we made full use of the large private roof terrace. In June there were no bugs, so the roof terrace accommodates al fresco dining - and wining - in the evenings. We used the buses to visit other villages, and did not feel it necessary to hire a car apart from Stevie's Taxi for airport tranfers. The apartment is well equipped, spacious, and clean. Although the swimming pool is shared, it is easy to look from the veranda and choose your moments if you prefer to enjoy the pool alone. There is no wifi in the apartment, but there is free WiFi access at almost all of the cafes and restaurants. |
