The Paphos region

Paphos bundles a remarkable array of sights and attractions into such a small space: museums and archaeological sites, clean beach resorts, medieval fortresses, age-old temples standing on empty hillsides, pretty valleys chequered with vineyards, grain fields and olive groves all completing the landscape.
The Western Troodos Mountains adding a stunning backdrop to the coastal town.
A magnificent island where one can swim and ski all in the same day, this is truly a holiday paradise with something for everyone.
And with local beaches such as Coral Bay offering luxurious white sand and clear waters, it is the perfect place to relax, top up the tan and enjoy swimming in the ocean without a care in the world.
Plus, dozens of quaint villages nestle in the mountains surrounding the town, with life relaxed and seemingly unchanged for decades.
This gives tourists the opportunity to experience a slice of the real Cyprus, untarnished by commercialism and the growing holiday market, while also ensuring that the area delivers for more than just sun, sea and sand.
However, Paphos offers all three of those in abundance with the island of Cyprus offering long, hot summers and mild winters.
The Kato Paphos / Universal Gardens area
Places to go:
Aphrodites Rock,is one of the most stunning parts of the Cypriot coastline, also the birth place of Aphrodite. Legend has it that this is where the Goddess of Love emerged from the sea, and everywhere she stepped between here and Paphos itself, sprang life, and that's why Paphos district is so fertile
The ancient Tombs of the Kings. This is a World Heritage site which , was the final resting place of about 100 Ptolemaic aristocrats who lived and died in the city between 3 BC and 3 AD. The tombs are impressive, carved out of solid rock, some featuring Doric pillars and frescoed walls. Archaeological excavations are ongoing at the site, which also features a church known as Paleoekklisia, which sports traces of Byzantine frescoes.
The Troodos Mountains their monasteries and villages are well worth a trip. While most tourism is concentrated around the coastal resorts, the interior of the island offers a charm of its own. The undulating hillsides of the Troodos and Makheras mountains are spotted with hundreds of tiny villages, which, especially in summer, offer a cool retreat from the hustle and bustle of the beaches. In winter the same mountains offer the option of alpine-style holiday.
Start the day in Ktima, or upper Pafos, with a visit to the Covered Market, where you’ll find lace, embroidery, ceramics and leather goods on sale and an array of open-air stalls selling everything the Cypriot housewife could wish for, from kebab skewers to fresh fruit and vegetables.
Acropolis: Near the modern Paphos lighthouse is sited a complex of ancient buildings, including a Roman Odeon, built in the 2nd century AD, which has been restored and is now used for summer orchestral and stage performances. The Odeon was the focus of the ancient city centre, of which some ruins still remain in the area. South of the Odeon are the remnants of the Roman Temple of Asclepius, the God of Medicine, and north of the lighthouse are the ruins of the ancient town walls.
Baths of Aphrodite: A romantic side trip from Paphos is a visit to the natural grotto on the Akamas Peninsula near Polis (30 miles/48km north of Pahpos) where legend has it that the Greek goddess of love, Aphrodite, used to take her baths. The serene pool, shaded by a fig tree and surrounded by beautiful examples of maindenhair fern, can be reached by nature trails from Akamas.
Catacombs: A large pistachio tree marks the entrance to the underground catacombs of Agia Solomoni in Kato Paphos. The tree is a strange sight, festooned as it usually is with pieces of cloth tied onto it by the faithful as offerings, in the hope that this sacred tree will cure various ailments. The catacombs themselves were carved into Fabrica hill, below the ancient Roman city wall, in the 4th century BC, and later became chapels for the early Christians. The underground chapels feature some interesting frescoes and graffiti left by 13th-century Crusaders, and there are numerous legends and stories attached to the patron saint Ayia Solomoni. Visitors are advised to take a torch along to explore the catacombs
The Mosaics of Paphos: The striking mosaic floors in a series of ancient Roman noblemen’s villas, dating from the third to fifth century AD, are a must-see for visitors to Paphos. The site where the villas are still being excavated can be found about 300 metres from the Paphos harbour. The mosaics featuring mythological scenes are visible in the houses of Dionysus, Orpheus and Aion, and the Villa of Theseus. All were made of small cubes of marble and stone, called tesserae, with glass paste added to widen the range of colour. In the House of Dionysus, for example, 5,985 square feet (556 sq metres) of floor space in 14 rooms are covered with the gorgeous mosaics.
Best local dish: Meze ( a variety of local meat or fish )
Best local produce: Lacework and baskets. Both available at the local Market.

Guestbook for Sirena Olympia
Absolutely delight - home away from home, We decided to take this break 48 hours before we left and were provided with information regarding where to collect the key, organising a welcome pack right through to having our taxi booked to pick us up at the airport. The apartment was absolutely first class. We were impressed by the cleanliness and high quality of furnishings. This apartment is spacious and comfortable with all amenities right through to laundering facilities (not that you want to be doing this). There are air conditioning units in all rooms which provided the comfort needed when returning from the heat of the day. Details of restaurants to use, supermarkets etc were to hand. The sunny balcony is super and overlooking the pool, breakfast every morning and drinks in the evening watching the sun go down. Location was excellent with Paphos harbour being just a 20 minute walk away. We did this daily to enjoy breakfast overlooking the ocean and the walk through the residential area past all the fruit trees was lovely. Paphos provided everything we needed with a fantastic array of restaurants from traditional to beautiful Chinese and European but we always made our way back to the apartment to chill by the pool. Of course for those who like to party that was also available again only a 20 minute walk away. We found everyone to be so friendly and helpful and met some lovely people at the complex who helped us with decisions on where to go to eat and what to do. This apartment is a must and definitely a home away from home being comfortable, safe and clean we had such a fabulous relaxing time. We really do not have any negative things to say except we wished we had stayed longer... debs and andrew
The apartment was so much more luxurious than I was expecting . . . not your usual self catering holiday accommodation. It is beautifully and comfortably furnished with all the mod cons of home. The two bathrooms are especially useful and the kitchen had every gadget you could need. The balcony overlooks the very pretty pool and the whole site is very well maintained. It is in a convenient position, just a short (20-25 minute) walk to Paphos harbour and all the hustle and bustle of the town centre, yet the apartment complex was very peaceful and private. The owner arranged a limo to collect us from the airport only a 15-20 minute drive away so we were spoilt from the very start. We also enjoyed a Day Safari to the Troodos Mountains which was fantastic. I am planning to return next year.Anna
I travelled with two friends for a girly week. We were very impressed by the location of and facilities on offer at the apartment. We all like to cook and eat the healthy options so the kitchen was very well equipped for all our culinary needs. The living spaces were great for relaxing in for cosy chats, book reading etc. The washing machine meant we were able to travel lighter. We are definitely returning in 2011 :) Thank you
we stayed in this apartment in Sirena Olympia for 2 weeks and if was fabulous.
When we arrived at the apartment we were delighted, it was immaculately clean with modern facilities throughout. Something myself and my partner both agreed on was how the apartment actually felt like a home you could go back to at the end of the day, we were happy relaxing by the pool but equally happy to stay in for a while! The pool was always clean and peaceful and we always managed to get a sun lounger! the location was perfect, we were near enough to walk into town in the evenings but it was far enough that we weren't disturbed at night time.
I have many happy memories of this holiday and this apartment was the main reason for this and I would recommend this apartment to anyone!
thankyou for an amazing holiday! Brenda and Robert
I travelled to Cyprus with my boyfriend in May 2009, we were absolutely thrilled with the apartment!! It was very clean and spacious with beautiful decor. The surrounding area was also very pleasant. I found katrina very helpful with the buildup to our travels as she prebooked us a taxi and organised us a welcome back with basic food and drink as we arrived late evening! The apartment also had various leaflets with ideas of what to do during our stay. We enjoyed it so much we have already booked again for this year!! Thankyou Katrina
