The Paphos region

Cyprus is known as the birth place of Aphrodite (Venus to the Romans), the goddess of love. It is the third largest Mediterranean island and is situated in its North-eastern corner, due South of Turkey It is almost 100 miles East-West and up to 40 miles North/South in size. Since 1974, the island has been divided into two parts, with Turkey occupying just over one third of it to the North. Paphos is situated in the Greek Cypriot part, with English being widely spoken and they even drive on the same side of the road as we do. The Greek Cypriots are very friendly and helpful people and the crime rate is extremely low, at only one-sixth of the European average. Most importantly, Cyprus boasts the warmest climate of all the islands in the Mediterranean, averaging only thirty days of rain each year, nearly all of it in the winter months. The island has a mild climate in the winter, is very warm in the spring and autumn and can be extremely hot in July and August. There are approximately 3/4 of a million inhabitants on the island and Nicosia, towards the centre, is the capital with nearly 1/4 of a million people.

Kato Paphos is the harbour and tourist area of Paphos and was the ancient Roman capital of the island. The town is full of inexpensive restaurants, bars and clubs etc. to suit all tastes and budgets. Margarita Gardens is located in a sought after area in the heart of Kato Paphos just a few minutes walk from tavernas, supermarkets , 10 minutes walk to the Harbour and 7 minutes or less to the Blue flag municipal beach. The whole town is included on UNESCO’S World Heritage Cultural List due to the richness of its archaeological sites. These include the famous Roman mosaics, the ancient Byzantine fort, the Roman Amphitheatre, the Tombs of the Kings and many historical churches etc. Ayia Kyriaki church is just a 5 minutes walk away. Also nearby are the Paphos Aquarium, Water Park, Go-Kart track and a good selection of shops. Also worth a visit is Ermes , which is more like a small Debenhams and is a good place to get coffee, snacks and even meals, whilst enjoying a general view of the harbour. Several boat trips also sail from Paphos harbour and Latchi, which is in the North. The main town of Paphos has an attractive hilly backdrop and contains a large market, cinemas, Ten Pin bowling alley, museums and many more shops. There are also two golf courses nearby and even a ski resort in the Troodos Mountains, which is just over an hours drive away. In short, you will not run out of things to do.
