The Paphos District

The Penthouse is situated within easy reach of all of the areas of historical interest and close to 3 golf courses and a water park.
Cyprus enjoys 335 days of sunshine a year on average and in the summer months the sun shines for 12 hours per day. Even in the winter months the temperature rarely drops below 15C. Peak temperatures are in July and August, with wonderfully warm and sunny days from May to the end of October. Outside of these months the climate is still marvellous with average temperatures never much below 60 degrees F.

Paphos is probably the most picturesque place in Cyprus and combines ancient history with a cosmopolitan, modern tourist resort. The Penthouse is in the area by the coast known as Kato Paphos and has fine sea views. A ten minute walk can take you to either the bars and restaurants near the pretty little harbour or to the old town of Paphos which, with its narrow streets, hustle and bustle, covered market and typically Cypriot atmosphere, is well worth a visit.

If you want to venture farther a field then hiring a car is straightforward and affordable with petrol significantly cheaper than in the UK. The majority of roads on Cyprus are modern, there is a developing motorway network, and access to all areas is relatively easy. Driving is on the left side of the road, as in the UK.

Other things that will attracted you to Cyprus is that most Cypriots speak English, are friendly and the crime rate is very low!

Kato Paphos / Universal District

The charming west coast town of Paphos focuses around an attractive little harbour whose picturesque open-air fish restaurants line a quayside of bright fishing boats and pleasure craft.
With a population of just 28.000 Paphos nestles In the lee of the Western Troodhos Mountains, which add another dimension to this area of scenic beauty. The recent addition of its own international airport nearby has opened up the Paphos area, and the resort is graced with some luxury hotels along the coastline.
Paphos has an air of holiday charm combined with history, and olden-day elegance is lent to the town by its classical style buildings in the upper part of town which leads to the shopping area. The lower part of the town - known as Kato Paphos has a life of its own, near to the sea - home of the harbour, the fish tavernas, souvenir shops and several beautiful hotels with important archaeological sites around them.
Paphos is entwined with Greek mythology, and the legendary birth of Aphrodite on her shores brought fame and worshippers there to follow the cult of the Goddess. Landmarks associated with Aphrodite are the rugged rocks of her beautiful birthshore known as the Aphrodite Rocks or "Petra tou Romiou", the evocative sanctuary of Aphrodite at Kouklia Village, one-time shrine and scene of pagan festivals for thousands, the Baths of Aphrodite at Polis, supposed source of fertility and the Fountain of Love, or Fontana Amorosa, a few miles further into the Akamas Peninsula.
Even the town's name is linked to the Goddess, for Paphos was the name of the mythological daughter of Venus and Pygmalion.
Paphos became the capital of Cyprus under the successors of Alexander the Great - the Ptolemies and in those days its harbour was a busy, thriving port. It continued as the island's first city for more than seven centuries, retaining its importance under Roman rule. Its most famous Governor Sergius Paulus, was converted to Christianity by St Paul in 45 AD.
But the Paphos history dates back a great deal further. In fact the whole area abounds in historical and archaeological treasures.

There's lots to see and do around Paphos whatever your interests. It is a great place for a family holiday or a romantic getaway:

Lose yourself in history:
There are a number of impressive historical sites on your door step. Paphos harbour has offered a safe haven for ships for more than 2000 years. Guarding the habour is a restored medieval castle originally built by the crusaders in the 13th century and is a must vist to enjoy the excellent views from the battlements.

The history of Paphos is very tangible, from the 4th century Roman Mosiacs near the habour, the Christian catacombs to the 4th century Tombs of the Kings. As a consequence, Paphos is on UNESCO's World Cultural Heritage. Even children can get engrossed in the tales and become in turn pirate, knight and explorer.

Cyprus is famous as the birth place of the goddess Aphrodite (Venus in Roman mythology).the goddess of love and beauty. Legend says that she emerged from the sea at Aphrodite’s Rock in a surge of sea foam.

Take to the water:
A pirate ship leaves the habour twice a week but if you don't want to walk the plank then you can hire a speedboat, jet ski or pedalo. You can also enjoy various fun rides such as the banana ride, thrilling speedboat ride or the more leisurely glass bottom boat trip.

You can take to the skies parasailing or get closer to the fish scuba diving. The dive schools can offer one day classes to recognised qualifications.

The excellent Paphos water park with many water slides and activities for all age groups, including toddlers, is only 5 minutes drive or buses are cheap and frequent.

Relax on the beach:
The coastline is noted for its diversity, from rugged cliffs to secluded coves and sandy beaches. In Paphos you can easily walk to the Pharos Lighthouse beach or municipal beach by the habour. Coral Bay, with its lovely sandy beach with watersports and tavernas is only 20 minutes drive away, or can be reached by public transport. Lara beach has crystal clear waters and is home to the turtle sanctuary.

Eating / drinking:
Also in the vicinity there are excellent local restaurants as well as small stores and supermarkets. But with over 700 hundred eating places to choose from in Paphos you will find your own favourites. A very popular area is the pedestrian promenade by the habour which is home to a number of traditional tavernas as well as local Pelicans, which are very used to people and quite friendly!

Enjoy great days out:
The water park is a firm favourite with adults and children alike but there are many other places to visit and new activites to try;
Horse riding
Jeep and Quad Bike Safaris
Karting - there is an exciting karting track within minutes of the apartment for beginners and experienced drivers
Golfing - there are three 18 hole golf courses within half an hours drive of Paphos
Skiing - in the winter, a 1 hour drive into the Troodos Mountains will provide you with good skiing.
Walking - 48 signed trails traverse 200 kilometres of countryside island wide

Paphos Aquarium
Pafos Bird and Animal Park
Donkey Farm at Kathikas
Baths of Aphrodite
Sanctuary of Aphrodite
Ayios Neofytos Monastery
A drive up to Troodos mountains and to Latchi & Polis are highly recommended, along with a shopping trip to Nicosia or Limassol.

A guide book is available in the Penthouse to assist you in making the most of your holiday..

Guestbook for 201 Alexia Court

Hi Joanne - just a few lines to say how much we liked the apartment. We
thought everything about it was lovely - the quality of
furnishings/equipment was really nice even down to the cutlery and Jamie
Oliver saucepans! We have stayed in quite a few apartments and it makes a
difference when everything you need is there and is of a high standard.
Couldn't get Mike to move off the roof terrace - hence he is very brown! - the pool was very clean
- thought you'd be glad to know that the complex is being well maintained.
We had a lovely holiday - weather very good
- once again thanks for the use of the apartment
Jill & Mike Steele
