The Paphos District
The capital of the west and rich in ancient history, the resort town of Paphos has as it's focul point a charming fishing harbour, lined with open-air cafes and tavernas, serving a tempting menu of the day's catch. Paphos enjoys a mediterranean climate, with hot, sunny summers and short mild winters, when the weather is comparable to a pleasant European spring. In late January and February, snow falls on the nearby Troodos mountains and it is possible to take a ski trip and a dip in the sea on the same day!
Legend has it that this was the birthplace of Aphrodite, the mythological goddess of beauty and love. The rock formation that juts from the sea known as 'Petra Tou Romiou' (the venus rock) marks the site that she is supposed to have risen from the sea. The bath's of Aphrodite at Polis and 'Fontana Amorosa' (fountain of love) also echo her links with the island. The legacy of this island's remarkable history has made the whole area of paphos to seem like an outdoor museum and led to UNESCO taking the decision to add the entire town to it's list of world heritage sites. Among the teasures to be found in paphos are the ancient tombs of the kings, spread over a vast area these impressive tombs date back to 4th century BC. The remarkable mosaics close to the harbour have been beautifully preserved after an incredible 16 centuries under the soil and no visit to paphos would be complete without a visit to both of these sights.

There is so much to see and do in Paphos and the surrounding are that there really is something for everyone. Nature lovers will want to spend some time with the flora and fauna of the troodos mountains or perhaps a trip into the Akamas national park.
The action seekers will find deep sea diving, numerous watersports as well as the more adventerous jeep safaris into the mountains and around the Akamas Peninsula. There is also one of the largest waterparks in Europe. In Paphos, culture vultures really will be spoilt for choice as there are sites of ancient history, museums, religious buildings, tombs and ruins too numerous to mention.
