The Paphos region

Paphos, the Capital of the west and positively teeming with history is Paphos, site of the island's second international airport. The resort town has as its focal point a charming fishing harbour by Paphos Fort, lined with open-air cafes and tavernas that serve a tempting menu of the day's catch.

It was on Paphos shoreline that the mythological Goddess Aphrodite was born a legend that spawned a massive wave of cult worship from neighbouring countries that lasted several centuries. The large rock that juts from the sea is known as 'Petra tou Romiou' - The Venus Rock - while the Baths of Aphrodite at Polis also echoes her apparent penchant for the island. At Palaepafos, Koukiia lie the remains of the Goddess's earliest Sanctuary.

Another 'first' for Paphos was its early recognition of Christianity. While under Roman rule in 45 A.D., it was here that Saint Paul converted the first ruler to the faith.

The legacy from its remarkable history adds up to nothing less than an open museum, so much so that UNESCO simply added the whole town to its World Cultural Heritage List. Among the treasures unearthed, are the remarkable mosaics in the Houses of Dionysos, Theseus and Aion, beautifully preserved after 16 centuries under the soil. Then there are the mysterious vaults and caves, the Tombs of the Kings, the Pillar to which Saint Paul was allegedly tied and whipped, the ancient Odeon Theatre and other places of interest including the Byzantine Museum and the District Archaeological Museum.

Geroskipou with its remarkable five-domed Byzantine church of Agia Paraskevi, and its Folk Art Museum is a village known for many years now for its special delight 'loukoumi .

Ago Neofytos Monastery, famous for its 'Encleistra', Enclosure, carved out of the mountain by the hermit himself, boasts some of the finest Byzantine frescoes of the 12th and 15th centuries. Chrysorrogiatissa Monastery makes its own range of wines using home-grown grapes. A small museum dedicated to Archbishop Makarios, first president of Cyprus, is found at Pano Panagia. From here it is a rewarding drive to the majestic Cedar Valley, home of the indigenous Cyprus horned sheep, the Moufflon.

Lempa village can be singled out as one with particular historic significance. In its pretty setting near the sea, Lempa's link with prehistory is the site of a chalcolithic settlement. Today the faithful reconstruction of several dwellings, gives an insight into chalcolithic life on the island.

Further north lies the resort-town of Polis, overlooking the beautiful Chrysochou Bay with its charming fishing refuge of Latsi. The relatively unspoilt state of the countryside and villages make the area a real delight for the walker and naturalist.

The low-lying scenery around Paphos, much of it cultivated with banana plantations and backed by the gentle foothills of the western Troodos range, has an attractively open quality to it. This is the gateway to the Peninsula of Akamas, a natural wilderness of incredible beauty with breathtaking gorges, spectacular coastlines and enjoyable nature trails

"Fabulous home away from home."

My family, which includes me, Hubby, Daughter aged 21, Son aged 14, and Son aged 9, had the pleasure of staying at Kates apartment from June 30th - July 7th. It has to be pointed out immediately that the apartment is very well apointed, with lovely furnishings, fully equipped kitchen, spacious bathroom, and a lovely standard throughout. We liked that it was located on the second floor as not only did you have more privacy on the balcony, you could leave your washing and belongings out with peace of mind, and could sit out playing family games without intrusion. Also a lovely bonus was an air conditioned lift.
We were lucky enough to have had the pool to ourselves but for an older couple, who were lovely, for the first 3 days. After that it got a little busier, but not overcrowded.
The temperatures were in the mid 30's, which was more than hot enough for us, we are to believe that mid July - early Sept is much hotter.
Despite the fantastic Bus links virtually on the doorstep, we decided to hire a car for 3 days, from Horizon. Carol was really helpful not only giving us a great rental offer but gave us great advice on places to visit. She also mentioned that our apartment was located in a very safe area of the 'town', which is always reassuring to hear.
We really recommend a drive up the Troodos Mountains, simply beautiful with lovely trails of differing lengths to suit all walking abilities. On the way down we stopped at a lovely village called Omados, which we were told is the oldest mountain village in Cyprus. Steeped in history, with original cobble roads, a stunning Monastery and handmade lace shops. Like everywhere we went, the people of Omados were so welcoming and friendly, and the food was excellent.
As mentioned on the website, there is so much to do in the Kato Paphos area. From the very many bars and restaurants, shops, beautiful beaches, history. The harbour is a great, lively place to visit, just be prepared for the attention of the staff and owners of the many restaurants as they will and do encourage you to spend time in their establishments.
A really unusual activity is to try under sea walking in Coral Bay, just a short journey on the bus, but must be booked in advance due to high interest. It can be booked through Carol at Horizon.
We also enjoyed a half day cruise on the Wave Dancer, located at the harbour. All I can say is WOW, what fun.
At 40 euro per adult all inclusive, and 15 euro per child, you got 4 hours on the boat, a live band, which were great, free unlimited bar, BBQ cooked in front of you with homemade burgers, chicken fillets, sausages and large salad bar, a stop off the coast to swim in the sea, go kayaking and snorkeling. It has to be said that we all thoroughly enjoyed it, and thought it was very good value.
We had such a lovely time there that we are hoping to join the many previous guests that have made repeated visits to Kates apartment.
There really is something for every one, and Kates apartment is a very comfortable base to enjoy your holiday from. Have fun :)

"Lovely apartment in a great location"

We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday in Paphos. We had good weather but mostly it was down to having a good place to call base. Within easy reach of all local attractions, restaurants and amenities, at the same time as being a great place to just chill out, and away from the hustle and bustle. It's well appointed, clean, and comfortable, with all you need in the kitchen.
There was an issue with the pool, but it eventually got sorted. The pool area is sufficiently secluded and quiet, to get your nice relaxing suntanning, and reading, done...
Would definitely come again...

"A relaxing, well located, well appointed and clean appartment"

We used Suntransfers both ways from Paphos airport, just 30 mins away, very easy. This appartment is very well appointed with everything you could need. It is clean and comfortable with good aircon that is on a 2hr max at one burst timer. It is great for 4 people with enough space to relax. The bacony faces east with a view of the pool and gets screamingly hot in the morning. It also shelters you from any westerly sea breeze in pm so not ideal for mid August but must be lovely outside of the peak summer heat. It is situated close (2 mins walk) to the tomb of Kings road which has around 20 very good restaurants of all types (our favourites were Muse, Adelaida, Raffles and Duoma),
and bus stops north or south that are very cheap and efficient. This mini resort is better than the main harbour that is a mile away via 15 minute bus ride and we found a little disappointing, just people trying to flog you boat trips and average restaurants. The pool is really fabulous and so welcoming in the heat - Paphos beaches are not that spectaculour. Coral bay is best. Local lighthouse and Municipal leave a bit to be desired and are not your classic sandy. Overall we would definately recommend this appartment to anyone. It is a lovely place to have a seriously good holiday break and enjoy good food and easy amenities.

"great apartment and value for money"

our family holiday was every thing we wanted, lots of space, comfortable, very clean and within easy reach of local attractions, our only problem was going when it was so very hot, unless you have the air-con on constant,it can get very uncomfortable, would not go july again, the local kings taxi were great used them a lot,the local market is a nice place to visit as is paphos town, munisable beach is much safer than lighthouse beach, coral bay is ok but amenities on beach very basic, but has a nice village for eating and shopping, the local kings road has some nice traditional eating places,we all enjoyed our stay and would go back to diane but when its cooler, hope this info helps.

"Lovely spotless apartment, everything you need, Booking hastle free"

Just back from Cyprus (June 12). Never used Holliday Lettings before but found it all very easy and the owner e mailed back regarding any questions very quickly (instantly in some cases) The information sheets the owner provides re the apartment, equipment, sun loungers, travel and local sites of interest were excellent.

Lovely apartment exactly like the pictures within a small quiet apartment block. The balcony overlooks the swimming pool and gets the sun in the morning and provides some shade in the evening. The pool was fabulous, large enough for swimming but not deep and really warm, suited us fine.

The flat has everything you need for a holiday, Fridge with quite a large freezer compartment, washing machine, TV, Sterio and Safe. The air conditioning is on a timer ( which means you can switch it on when you want but it goes off in half an hour - just means that you dont go out and leave it on - which seems sensible ) and the owner can even organise a food breakfast pack on request.

I went with three other ladies and we all thoroughly enjoyed not only the apartment but the area. Its only a five minute walk ( in the flat) to the local entertainment and some lovely restaurants. We went to the Harbout area quite a few nights and its really nice and although we hired a car its only 8 euros in a Taxi or 1 euro on the bus.

All of us agreed that we had a fabulous holiday and would like to return toCyprus and this apaartment

"Fantastic apartment, Fantastic Location! Ideal base for our holiday!"

Apartment was spotless, large and very well equipped. Better in real life than on the photos!
Pool was warm and great for the kids and us!
Two minutes walk and you are on the Tomb of the Kings Road with plenty of bars and restaurants to choose from.
Only ten mins from the beach and five minute bus ride or half hour walk to the harbour.
Would highly recommend this for anyone visiting Cyprus.
Couldnt have asked for more!
