The Paphos District
A fascinating blend of endless coastline of sandy coves and beaches washed gently by clear blue waters, makes Cyprus and more particularly Paphos and ideal holiday destination. In ancient times Paphos was the capital of Cyprus and lies in an area of incredible natural beauty.
The island's position in the eastern Mediterranean at the crossroads between east and west, has influenced its development through the centuries providing it with history dating back to 6,000 B.C. Consequently there many archaeological ruins to see.
Travel a little way from the coast into the pine forests; an hour's drive in the winter for skiing in the Troodos Mountains; experience a kaleidoscope of colours in the springtime; shake hands with its people whose reputation for good food and hospitality is worldwide and you'll want to stay forever.
The air temperatures range from 10-20 degree C off-season up to 25-35 degree C in the summer season. Cyprus is +3 hours from last Sunday in March to Saturday before last Sunday in October, otherwise it is +2 hours from GMT.
Kato Paphos area
The charming and historic town of Paphos, with its picturesque harbour and many ancient sites, has become the most popular resort in Cyprus. The town is expanding rapidly and attracts many visitors throughout the year, so the choice of entertainment and restaurants is endless.
Shopping and sports facilities are excellent and the island's first three full size golf courses operate in the Paphos area. The area also contains many of the archaeological treasures of Cyprus that are included in the official UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. The spectacular coastline around Paphos is unparalleled and the whole area is in a wonderful position for exploring the unspoiled Akamas peninsula and the Troodos Mountains.
Kato Pafos is the area that most people associate with as this is the area close to the harbour and fort and it attracts thousands of visitors each year, this makes it an ideal location for your holiday in the sun.
Paphos is ideal for combining the pleasures of sightseeing with some relaxing beach life and boasts a fascinating old town of winding alleyways, markets and shops. The town is really divided into two - a quaint fishing harbour and an atmospheric Old Town, both are relaxing and beautifully unhurried. Nearby is the popular and pretty harbourside area, guarded by a looming Venetian Fort and bordered by numerous open air terraced restaurants, cafes and bars where you can catch your breath inbetween bouts of sightseeing. The Old Town is a real shopping emporium made up of narrow street housing numerous stores and a lively market to roam around. Culturally Paphos has much to keep you occupied, with plenty of ancient historical sites and monuments to explore such as the awesome Tomb of the Kings and ancient mosaics, close by. There's also the chance to savour some Cypriot legend at Aphrodite's Rock, where the goddess of Love was believed to have been born from the seas.
If you feel like hitting the beach, there are a number of small sandy bays dotted in and around the town, many of which offer watersports and scuba-diving. The best curve of golden sand is at Coral Bay, a short bus ride away. Make sure you get back into town for the evening though, the harbour bars and fish restaurants are the perfect place for a lazy supper and ideal for discussing your day's discoveries. There's also the opportunity to check-out the Bouzouki clubs and bars scattered around the harbour where you will find a good supply of night-time activity, these are certain to see you through until the early morning.
