History: Paphos has been inhabited since the Neolithic period. Aphrodite the goddess of love's mythical birthplace was on this island. The remains of mansions, palaces, theatres, fortresses and tombs of the Classical, Hellenistic and Roman periods are still being found. After 1974, there was rapid economic expansion especially in tourism. The government invested heavily in water works, road infrastructure and the building of Paphos International Airport. Today modern Paphos, with a population of about 50,000, is a popular sea and a fast developing tourist resort. New Paphos possesses a quaint fishing harbour with seafront promenade and restaurants.
Landmarks: UNESCO added the whole town of Paphos to its World Cultural Heritage List because the the area is of exceptional architectural and historic value.
1. The Castle of Paphos can be found at the harbour. Now an open museam originally built as a Byzantine fort to protect the harbour 2. The rock of Aphrodite (Petra tou Romiou, "Stone of the Greek") emerges from the sea. 7. Yeroskipou with its remarkable five-domed Byzantine church of Ayia Paraskevi, and its Folk Art Museum is a town known for the production of arts & crafts and special 'loukoumia' sweets. 8.
