The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Kas is the most southerly of all the Turkish resorts, nestling between the Mediterranean coast and up to 1000m high mountains it is protected from the prevailing northerly winds. Kas therefore enjoys a very pleasant climate all year round with an average of 300 days sunshine per year.
There is a Roman ampitheatre and many other places of historical interest; and it has spots of natural beauty, including excellent beaches, and a number of interesting caves, some of them underwater. The mountains behind the coast offer countless places for trekking, climbing and river rafting.
Kas itself is a quiet pleasant town with its blue sea and narrow streets scented with jasmine flowers. There are plenty of quiet cafes serving home cooking, or small bars to relax after a day's activities.
Kas area
Kas is the perfect place for relaxation, romance and adventure. "As a resort, Kas has style, with some of the best shops and restaurants on the Mediterranean coast. An influx of fashion designers and artisans have made the town a centre for arts and crafts, jewellery and textiles. It also has numerous excellent restaurants, a healthy array of trendy bars and cafes, and a sprinkling of discos." (Insight Guides)
A popular excursion from Kas is Kekova island in the neighbouring district of Demre. Here in the magnificent bays you will see a surprising variety of wrecks of ancient ships and ancient cities sunk under the sea by earthquakes over the centuries. The sea is so perfectly clear that the details of city buildings such as staircases or columns can be seen from the boat.
Patara beach is just a 45 minute drive from Kas. It is stunning and makes an enjoyable visit as well as the nearby ancient site of Patara, with its gorgeous landscape and great swimming. Part of a national park, it is a key biodiversity area, rich in birdlife and the breeding ground of the endangered loggerhead turtle (caretta caretta).
Kas is one of the leading spots for diving in Turkey. There is a diving school, many places with equipment for hire and at the port local divers offer courses. The Mediterranean around Kas has the best visibility and greatest variety of sea life of the entire Turkish coast, as well as the shortest transfer times to close to thirty dive sites. Half day taster dives are a great introduction. If you decide to try diving in Kas you can expect to see a beautiful array of fish and other sea creatures like octopus and possibly dolphins, and also the wrecks of some ancient ships.
The ruins of the antique cities of Komba (in the village of Gömbe), Nisa, Kandyba, Phellos, Istlada, Apollonia, Isinda and Kyaenai can also be visited.
White-water rafting, sea kayaking, paragliding, scuba, canyoning and mountain trekking, as well as horse riding, canoeing, waterskiing, mountain biking and fishing are available for vacationers to enjoy.
Kas is also an important stopping point for the 'Blue Voyage' gulet cruises and you can charter a boat to tour along the beautiful coastline and see remote coves and islands only accessible by boat. The Lycian Way, rated one of the worlds top 10 walks, passes through Kas.
Local travel agencies www.xanthostourism.com and www.bougainville-turkey.com cater for all the above activities and more as well as transfers to the airports if required.
Kas has an annual arts festival, jazz concerts in the Roman ampitheatre, and the Kiln Under the Sea arts collective have held underwater ceramics exhibitions here.

We really liked the apartment - it was very hot but we went straight into the pool which was great. We enjoyed the week and the flat and view. Ms B, Cheltenham

Had a great time. The apartment was great. Kas is great, can recommend Xanthos for days out. We did two, Saklikent Gorge and sea Kyaking both really well organized and great fun especially if you have older kids. Yvonne and Richard, York
The stay in Kas was fantastic, a truly lovely part of the world. Your apartment was perfect for our requirements and I will certainly be recommending it to friends. The Andifli taxis provided an A1 service. A shame to be back in London now! Simon, London
