The Turkish Mediterranean Coast region
Kas - its name means "eyebrow" in Turkish clings to the lower part of a 500m high cliff that rises from the sea. Spectacular views of the Mediterranean, dotted with islands both Turkish and Greek, and the mountains behind it, give Kas its unique beauty. It also boasts an excellent climate and restful atmosphere. The ancient sites of Xanthos, Patara, the Letoon, Cyaneae, and Myra (the birthplace of St Nicholas/Father Christmas) are within easy reach, and there are attractive excursions to the islands scattered along the coast, including a sunken city of the Roman era. Kas itself dates back to at least 500 BC, as the Lycian city of Antiphellos, which then saw the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Turks arrive.
Kas has a full range of supermarkets, banks, restaurants, and travel agents. Its weekly Friday market offers a colourful and wide array of fruit and vegetables, spices, hardware, fashion, bags, and shoes - all at bargain prices -but you are welcome to haggle! It also has a state of the art hospitall and excellent English speaking doctors and dentists. Kas attracts up-market visitors looking for natural beauty and outdoor activity rather than noisy nightlife. Nevertheless, there is a good range of eating places and bars, some with late night live music and dancing. Scuba diving (renowned throughout the Med), paragliding, yachting, kayaking and canyoning are just some of the activities on offer. In the cooler season, these extend to hiking, mountaineering and trekking. We have provided notes on our favourite restaurants, shops, local activities, and agents who can arrange these - and trips further afield - in our "briefing notes" in the villa.
Kas is more than just a resort - it is a working town of some 7000 people who have a long tradition of fishing and farming.
The mountainside village of Gokseki is where the villa, Altin Kosk, is located. Gokseki means "glimpse of the sky". About 5 minutes walk from the villa is the village centre, where there are two shops which sell basic household provisions, including fresh bread, daily. There is a fruit and vegetable open market in the village centre every Thursday. The local minibus (dolmus) offers a half-hourly service to the nearest beach (5 mins) and Kas Town (10 mins) for approximately 0.70p. It runs from 7 am until the early hours - in winter the service is reduced.
