The Turkish Mediterranean Coast region
Kas is a calm and picturesque town nestling between the Mediterranean and the Taurus Mountains whose steep slopes rising to 500 metres protect it from the northerly winter winds. This is the most southerly of Turkish resorts and it enjoys long hot summer days and mild winters.
It is located in the region known as Lycia, the homeland of the once renowned people of the Lycian civilization who predated the Greeks and Romans. Kas was built on the site of the ancient Greek town of Antiphellos but remains of the earlier Lycian civilisation are to be seen all around. To find out more we suggest you go to www.lycianturkey.com and click on ‘sites of ancient Lycia’.
This is an area of wonderful scenery, fascinating history, abundant and varied wildlife and a gorgeous climate. The thriving town of about 8000 local inhabitants is large enough to be able to offer the visitor a copious range of tourist facilities but not so large as to have lost its sense of intimacy and integrity. Whatever your requirements, whether relaxation, adventure, or exploration, Kas is the perfect centre from which to enjoy a deeply satisfying holiday.
The reputation of Kas has been such that many Turks themselves have made it their choice of holiday destination in recent decades. Now it is favoured by visitors from many nations who enjoy the fact that it is just a little too distant from airports to attract the interest of many package tour companies.
Excellent restaurants and shops are to be found in the older part of the town, a hillside cluster of buildings with traditional Ottoman balconies and stone-paved streets. To the west of the town the ancient Greek amphitheatre is still used for concerts and other cultural events.
Until fairly recently when the coastal roads were built, access to the town was only possible by boat; today boating still plays a large role in the life of the town. The harbour offers mooring for a range of vessels including gulet cruise boats which can be chartered to tour the beautiful coastline. A marina is being built which will offer mooring for a further 470 yachts.
Kas is renowned as the best centre in Turkey for scuba diving with its crystal clear waters and abundant variety of sea life. Other activities include paragliding, sea-kayaking, trekking, mountain biking, canyoning and jeeping. We suggest you investigate the site www.bougainville-turkey.com for a fuller description of what you might do on holiday here.
For serious walking or for a gentle stroll there is the 509 kilometre Lycian way which passes by Kas and is considered by the Sunday Times to be one of the ten most beautiful walks in the world.
Should it become necessary to cool off a bit we suggest taking a drive inland to the mountainous national parklands where trout streams and a wide variety of wildlife are to be found.

"Surpassed all expectations"
Just home after four weeks at Capehouse, already trying to plan our return. There were five in our family group, children aged 27, 16 and 15. This was our first trip to Turkey, and I chose Kas after much research, and just happened to choose the peninsula. This was without a doubt the place to stay, I did have time to look around and see what else was on offer, but truly, if you're wanting a private house, with private pool and private platform, this is it. There are also several hotels within walking distance, and the closest one does the usual 5 star international hotel lunch menu (club sandwiches, etc), if you're bored with Turkish food. Even though I loved the local food, my teenagers wanted some variety and we didn't need to go far. There is a dolmus, which is the local bus, that comes through the Peninsula every half hour in peak holiday time and once an hour in off, I used it a couple of times and it was pleasant, so if you don't want to rent a car, you really don't need it. As far as our needs for pots, pans, utensils, etc. I never wanted for anything - it was all there. Even trips to Kas (10 minutes) aren't necessary as Hasan (pool, garden, general maintenance man) is there every morning and can bring you anything you need from town. He is a delight and never intrudes, usually finished and gone before you're even awake. The house is decorated beautifully with careful thought to guests comfort and needs. The bedrooms are so well laid out that there are no joining walls, and therefore no-one complaining there brother/sister's music is too loud, if you get my drift. The air conditioners worked perfectly and we were never too hot in the house, even though outside temperatures often soared above 35c. There is even a second kitchen/laundry off the bedroom/pool level, leaving drinks to chill and be by the pool was easy. Overall this is a very professional five star operation, run and owned (and built) by Hakan, who is a very charming gentleman, with all the time in the world for any queries, tips, etc. you may need. On the second day we were there we were lucky enough to see a turtle just off our platform, then a few minutes later we saw a school of tuna followed by two dolphins, awesome and magical. Although we only saw turtles again after that it was certainly pretty special. Overall we had the most perfect and memorable holiday, leaving us recharged and ready for work, school, planning another holiday...
