Enquire nowThe Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Kas is backed by the Taurus mountains. The region is forested and green with mountain streams, gorges and traditional villages, giving spectacular views and a wonderful contrast to the coast. It's an agricultural area with vineyards, orange and lemon groves, olives and pomegranates. Kas has a typical Mediterranean climate - hot, dry summers in the 30’s and in spring and autumn temperatures are in the 20’s. It's bathed in sun most of the year with an occasional dramatic summer storm to cool things down. Offshore is the Greek island of Megisti, known in Turkey as Meis. The people of Meis and Kas enjoy a lot of friendly interaction, it's a short boat ride away and delightful to visit. For 3,000 years this region was known as Lycia, Kas being an important Lycian port. Conquered by Alexander the Great, then in turn by Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman rulers, history comes alive with ancient cities and artifacts everywhere. Cities such as Xanthos and Patara, both Unesco World Heritage sites, Arycanda or Myra - all lie within easy reach - come and walk in the footsteps of Alexander and St. Paul.
The Kas / Cukurbag Peninsula area
Kas is a magnet for visitors because of its charm and unspoilt natural beauty. It has a slightly bohemian atmosphere and children are doted upon, it's child friendly. Enticing shops sell all manner of things Turkish, old and new, antiques, carpets, kelims, spices, jewellery & clothes. Friday is market day when villagers come to town to sell their produce, catch up with the latest news and each other. In alleys and lanes, seek out the cafes, bars and nightspots. There are excellent restaurants in all price ranges, some with stunning sea views, relaxing and romantic. Play backgammon in tea houses, enjoy a hookah, visit the hammam or the barber, whose rejuvenating massage will make you feel marvellous! The Culture House has art exhibitions and its cinema shows Turkish and international films. Recline in the Roman amphitheatre watching the sun set over the sea. Dress up or dress down and at night, enjoy the music… The 3 day XIV International Lycian/Kas Culture and Art Festival will be held at the end of June, date still to be set. It offers concerts, ballet, opera and film as well as art exhibitions. The amphitheatre is used for concerts and shows during the summer. Activities: Swimming - there are two small beaches on the peninsula and several diving platforms, one very close to the villa & waterslides at the Aqua Park Hotel. In and around Kas are several small pebble beaches, one ideal for families with children. The beach clubs are very popular and don't charge for the use of sunbeds or parasols! Other activities include scuba diving, sea kayaking, canoeing, white water rafting, fishing, boat trips, gulet cruises, boat hire, paragliding, jeep safari, gorge walking, trekking, walking the ancient Lycian Way, mountain biking, pottery and art classes and yoga. Places to Visit: Numerous archaeological sites. Limanagzi, Meis or the sea caves by boat. Kekova and the sunken city on a gulet cruise. Beautiful sandy beaches - either Kaputas with its aqua blue sea or Patara, the longest sand beach in Europe. Islamlar above Kalkan, to dine on freshwater trout. Saklikent Gorge, where the water tumbles from the mountains to the valley. Transport: Kas is 150km (2.5 hours) from Dalaman(DLM) and 190km (3 hours) from Antalya(AYT) International airports. Both scheduled and charter flights are available from many airline companies. The perfect spot to get away from it all and relax. The villa is well equipped, and is served by a reliable dolmuş bus that gets you into the centre of Kaş in about ten minutes. But once you've done your shopping, if you're anything like us, you'll want to spend as much of your time as possible in the beautiful villa. There's a well maintained pool, or you can climb down to the sea in about three minutes. We loved the villa and are hoping to come back next year. Each of us had our favourite nooks in the garden. |
