Home description
Villa Odessa is a unique architect-designed villa completed in 2008. Set in a large 1 donum landscaped plot (approx 1000 square metres), the house is a tasteful blend of classic and modern using traditional decorative stone, cool white interior walls and classic Mediterranean wrought iron furniture.
The house is comprehensively equipped to enable you to enjoy your holiday with a modern kitchen, beautiful lounge/diner with feature stone fireplace and smart flat-screen TV, motorised satellite receiver, DVD/VCR. But despite the indoor luxury we hope you don't spend too much time indoors! Instead, enjoy breakfast on the large upstairs terrace. Then laze around the pool or go to a beach. Watch the sunset from the terrace and cook dinner over the charcoal barbecue by the pool. Don't feel guilty - someone has to do it!

The Kyrenia District
Kyrenia sits in the middle of a narrow coastal plain between the Bespamark mountains and the Mediterranean sea. The region has a reputation as one of the most beautiful holiday areas in the world, and yet it is completely unspoilt.
Whilst development has increased over the past few years the place retains a laid-back air with little crime and local people who enjoy a reputation for friendliness and hospitality - and they drive on the left! The highest section of the mountain range stretches about 15 miles to the east and west of Kyrenia. Further east is the Karpaz peninsular which has miles of almost empty beaches (some of which are used as nesting sites for turtles), and large areas of nature reserve.
North Cyprus enjoys a wonderful climate with long hot summers and short mild winters. Daytime winter temperature in January and February can still reach 20 centigrade (70 Fahrenheit). In the spring from late March to May the fields are green and full of wild flowers. Temperatures match the best English summers. During June, July and August temperatures average over 30 degrees (into the 90s) with seemingly endless days of sunshine whilst in September and October the temperature drop back to the 80s whilst the sea remains beautiful and warm.
In Kyrenia itself there is a big variety of bars and restaurants. Naturally the tourist focal point is the harbour, but there is a good selection throughout the town. It's very much like any other Mediterranean resort, but you won't find stag parties wandering the streets! The town retains an air of tranquillity and relaxation. For the more decadent there are a few discos and casinos dotted along the main coast road.
Historic Sights. If you are tired of relaxing at the pool or on the beach there are numerous places to visit. A few highlights are:
Kyrenia harbour and castle: The world-famous horse-shoe harbour with it's array of yachts and tourist pleasure boats is the focus of the town and is dominated by the walls of Kyrenia castle. The castle museum is fascinating and boasts the world's oldest shipwreck.
St Hilarian castle: The towers and ramparts which can be seen high above the town on the peaks of the mountains were built in Byzantine times (along with nearby Buffavento and Kantara castles) and further fortified by the Crusaders. It is reputedly the inspiration for Walt Disney's Snow White castle.
Bellapais: Bellapais sits about 3 miles outside Kyrenia. The picturesque town is dominated by it's monastery and is a wonderful place to explore and then admire the spectacular views whilst enjoying lunch at one of the local restaurants.
Salamis and Famagusta: Salamis is on the east coast and is about a 2 hour drive. It is a truly amazing ancient city with a spectacular theatre, massive gymnasium and extensive Roman baths. After your visit cross the road and have a swim at the lovely beach. A few miles south is the walled city of Famagusta where you can walk along the city ramparts and explore narrow streets and a multitude of ancient churches and mosques.
Karsiyaka area
Karsiyaka sits astride the coastal highway about 10 miles west of Kyrenia below the Western end of the Bespamark mountains. The villa is about 1 mile from the road in the upper part of the village with it's landmark mosque. In the village there are small shops and a couple of local cafes. There are decent supermarkets on the main road and an excellent fish restaurant right on the sea.
There is an easily accessed public beach a few minutes drive from the villa with good parking, bar and cafe. There are numerous beaches all along the local coast andit's possible to explore along coast lanes and find your own empty cove or beach. Some of the prime beaches such as Camelot or Escape charge a small fee. Many hotels allow the use of their beaches for a similar fee.
Karsiyaka is a quiet unspoilt village, but there is a large variety of bars and restaurants in the next village of Lapta (about 3 miles), Alsancak (5 miles), and indeed all the way along the coast road to Kyrenia. Recommendations are available in the villa handbook.
Apart from the attractions of the seaside if you travel 10 minutes into the mountains above the village then you will find yourself in a completely different, almost Alpine, world of pine forest, rocky outcrops and goat herds - a paradise for walkers and nature lovers.
Other activities available include the beautiful new championship golf course which is about a 30 minute drive. Fishing trips can be arranged and there are several diving schools in the area. There are excellent boat excursions departing from Kyrenia harbour plus more exotic pursuits such as paragliding.
How to get there
Fly to Ercan:
All flights to Ercan touch down in Turkey, but you do not need to leave the aircraft.
We recommend the Turkish no-frills airline Pegasus ( www.flypeg.com ) flying from Stansted who are always highly competitive. Early and late season, you can get flights for as little £135. As with most budget airlines, the earlier you book, the cheaper it tends to be.
Also you can try Cyprus Turkish Airlines (who fly from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Birmingham and Manchester) or Turkish Airlines (who fly from Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted, Birmingham and Manchester). In our experience these flights are around £50 more.
Finally, you can try the following North Cyprus travel specialists: www.transit-travel.com Please note we have absolutely no relationship with this company. We have just found them very helpful when organising our own travel.
Our recommended car hire will pick you up from the airport (from Ercan it's free) and take you back. The car will be waiting at the house.
or:
Fly to Larnaca (Southern Cyprus) - transfer time to villa is around 90 mins. These flights are direct and duration is around 90 minutes less. Many airlines fly to Larnaca (e.g. BA, Cyprus Air, Monarch, Thomas Cook). If you are flying midweek you can pay substantially less.
Our recommended car hire will pick you up from the airport at a rate of £50 each way and take you back. Your car will be waiting at the house.
We strongly recommend that you hire a car in order to make the most of your holiday. The villa is around one kilometre from the main coast road to Kyrenia. There are so many beautiful sights, beaches, restaurants and bars to visit, that you will inevitably miss out if you have to rely on buses. Having said that the nearest bus stop is around 250 metres away and from the coast road the buses run every few minutes.
We are happy to advise on your travel arrangements. Do not hesitate to contact us!

Further details indoors: The house has been finished to a high standard with wrought-iron furniture, white walls and smart ceramics. The bedrooms and lounge/diner are all air-conditioned and the units double as heating during the cooler months. As the house sits above the coastal plain there is almost always a cooling breeze even on hottest days. Fans are also provided.
All sleeping accommodation is air-conditioned and consists of a master bedroom with an en-suite shower-room, a further double bedroom with adjoining family bathroom, and 2 twin bedrooms. The triple-aspect lounge/diner is stylishly furnished and opens onto the pool area and is ideal for entertaining.
The accommodation comprises: Spacious entrance hall Lounge/diner with seating for 8. Relax in the settees in front of the open fire, or entertain formally at the dining table.
Kitchen with large fridge/freezer, built in hob and cooker, dishwasher, water cooler, and all the appliances you would expect in a modern kitchen. Smart bistro table and 2 chairs.
Utility area with washing machine. Beautiful galleried landing with door to the sun-terrace. Master bedroom with en suite shower room and a range of built-in wardrobes. 2 twin bedrooms with a range of built-in wardrobes.
Further double bedroom with built in wardrobes and direct access to the sun-terrace. All the beds have duvets and extra blankets for the cooler months.
Please note there is currently no in-house internet access, but there is an internet cafe a couple of minutes away in the village. Mobile phone coverage is good, but as UK roaming is expensive there is a handset in the house which can be topped up, or you can purchase a SIM yourself from any local Turkcell agents or one of the larger supermarkets such as Tempo (on the road into Kyrenia).
Further details outdoors: The property is approached from the road up a flight of steps which open onto the main garden and pool. The gardens have been landscaped and planted with a large variety of local shrubs, plants, and ornamental and fruit trees.
There is a large tiled gazebo with a wooden circular table and seating for 8. Next to this area is a large rockery and a brick barbecue. The pool area has a variety of parasols, loungers and occasional tables. The 10 x 5 metre overflow pool is a metre deep in the shallow end and 3 metres at the deep end.
At either side of the house there is a staircase to the second terrace which runs behind the back of the upper storey. This area is planted with fruit trees and has stairs to the 3rd terrace which has yet more spectacular views of the coast and mountains.
The landing has direct access to the large sun-terrace which affords wonderful views of the village, mountains and coastline (on a very clear day you can see 40 miles to the mountains of Turkey). The terrace has a shaded pergola, gas barbecue and large table which accommodates 8.
At night the there are many lights around the garden, gazebo and terrace creating a romantic ambience and naturally the pool is lit for those midnight swims!

Cancellation Charges: Up to 8 weeks - Deposit. Between 29 & 55 days - 60% of total rental. Up to 28 days - 100% of total rental. If we are able to re-let the villa for the cancelled period we may, at our discretion, refund your cancellation charge.

Electricity usage: Electricity is very expensive in Cyprus and we all want to protect the environment, so please take care when using this resource. Leaving the air-conditioning on if you go out for example is a very expensive waste of energy. The electricity meter will be read immediately before and after your stay. Any unreasonably excessive electrical charge will be deducted from the security bond.
Very young and elderly guests. Because the house is approached by stairs and there are stairs in the gardens, extra care must be taken by our very young or elderly guests with impaired mobility. Parents are reminded to supervise their children at all times particularly around the swimming pool.
