The Kyrenia District
Kyrenia sits in the middle of a narrow coastal plain between the Bespamark mountains and the Mediterranean sea. The region has a reputation as one of the most beautiful holiday areas in the world, and yet it is completely unspoilt.
Whilst development has increased over the past few years the place retains a laid-back air with little crime and local people who enjoy a reputation for friendliness and hospitality - and they drive on the left! The highest section of the mountain range stretches about 15 miles to the east and west of Kyrenia. Further east is the Karpaz peninsular which has miles of almost empty beaches (some of which are used as nesting sites for turtles), and large areas of nature reserve.
North Cyprus enjoys a wonderful climate with long hot summers and short mild winters. Daytime winter temperature in January and February can still reach 20 centigrade (70 Fahrenheit). In the spring from late March to May the fields are green and full of wild flowers. Temperatures match the best English summers. During June, July and August temperatures average over 30 degrees (into the 90s) with seemingly endless days of sunshine whilst in September and October the temperature drop back to the 80s whilst the sea remains beautiful and warm.
In Kyrenia itself there is a big variety of bars and restaurants. Naturally the tourist focal point is the harbour, but there is a good selection throughout the town. It's very much like any other Mediterranean resort, but you won't find stag parties wandering the streets! The town retains an air of tranquillity and relaxation. For the more decadent there are a few discos and casinos dotted along the main coast road.
If you are tired of relaxing at the pool or on the beach there are numerous places to visit. A few highlights are:
Kyrenia harbour and castle:
The world-famous horse-shoe harbour with it's array of yachts and tourist pleasure boats is the focus of the town and is dominated by the walls of Kyrenia castle. The castle museum is fascinating and boasts the world's oldest shipwreck.
St Hilarian castle:
The towers and ramparts which can be seen high above the town on the peaks of the mountains were built in Byzantine times (along with nearby Buffavento and Kantara castles) and further fortified by the Crusaders. It is reputedly the inspiration for Walt Disney's Snow White castle.
Bellapais sits about 3 miles outside Kyrenia. The picturesque town is dominated by it's monastery and is a wonderful place to explore and then admire the spectacular views whilst enjoying lunch at one of the local restaurants.
Salamis and Famagusta:
Salamis is on the east coast and is about a 2 hour drive. It is a truly amazing ancient city with a spectacular theatre, massive gymnasium and extensive Roman baths. After your visit cross the road and have a swim at the lovely beach. A few miles south is the walled city of Famagusta where you can walk along the city ramparts and explore narrow streets and a multitude of ancient churches and mosques.
Karsiyaka sits astride the coastal highway about 10 miles west of Kyrenia below the Western end of the Bespamark mountains. The villa is about 1 mile from the road in the upper part of the village with it's landmark mosque. In the village there are small shops and a couple of local cafes. There are decent supermarkets on the main road and an excellent fish restaurant right on the sea.
There is an easily accessed public beach a few minutes drive from the villa with good parking, bar and cafe. There are numerous beaches all along the local coast and it's possible to explore along coast lanes and find your own empty cove or beach. Some of the prime beaches such as Camelot or Escape charge a small fee. Many hotels allow the use of their beaches for a similar fee. An added bonus is the possibility to see turtles nesting on Karsiyaka beach (under supervision) and also a half-hour drive away at Alagadi beach ("google" this for more info).
Karsiyaka is a quiet unspoilt village, but there is a large variety of bars and restaurants in the next village of Lapta (about 3 miles), Alsancak (5 miles), and indeed all the way along the coast road to Kyrenia. Recommendations made by ourselves and guests are available in the villa handbook.
Apart from the attractions of the seaside if you travel 10 minutes into the mountains above the village then you will find yourself in a completely different, almost Alpine, world of pine forest, rocky outcrops and goat herds - a paradise for walkers and nature lovers.
Other activities available include the beautiful new championship golf course which is about a 30 minute drive. Fishing trips can be arranged and there are several diving schools in the area. There are excellent boat excursions departing from Kyrenia harbour plus more exotic pursuits such as paragliding.

We were two families traveling together, and we loved Villa Odessa. Spaceous villa 4 bedrooms with AC. Big living room, kitchen and terrace. 4 kids (7-11) lived in the pool for 14 days. We tried a few beaches too, and the best one was Escape. We found great restaurants near by. Green Garden (within walking distance) and Calimari were our favorites. The restaurant with the greatest view was Kybele, up in Belapais Monestery in Girne. We had the best meal (great steaks) at the Stonegrill. I recomend that you hire a car.

"One of the best Villa we've stayed in."
Great Villa. We have been taking family villa holidays for over 20 years throughout Europe and North America and can say that Odessa is up there with the very best that we have stayed in. Booking was straightforward, plenty of friendly emails and photos keeping us updated. We had problems with the pool and villa pumps while we were there but this was all sorted with no fuss and no disruption to our holiday. We have friends living nearby so had guides who knew the local area and although it was out of season there was still enough to keep us busy when we were not relaxing in the pool. We will be going back.

"Lovely, spacious villa in excellent location"
We loved Villa Odessa and it was very spacious and well appointed. The views were beautiful. The swimming pool was excellent. We found the owner very helpful and friendly. We would definitely stay again if we get the opportunity as it was the ideal holiday villa. The garden was very pretty and the gazebo lovely for outdoor dining.

"What a great holiday!"
We stayed at villa Odessa in September . What a beautiful place inside and out! Located in a quiet village at the foot of the picturesque mountain. It takes only few minutes to drive to the nearest beaches, numerous cafes, restaurants…Most of times we cooked our breakfast just on a little gas barbeque on the terrace and enjoyed the breathtaking views at the same time with the experience you won’t forget! 3 level gardens are beautiful and non-overlooked . The view from the top level is just so spectacular! One of our biggest joys was the pool with crystal clean and 3m deep ( usually the pools are not deeper than 1.8-2m), you can dive in it, if you wish! Great fun. Even while swimming in the pool you can see the sea, just fantastic! The owner was in touch with us all the time and did everything to help us to have the best time! Thank you, Oksana! We explored as much as we could squeeze into 10 days. The best places to go St.Hillarion Castle, Girne Castle, Salamis ruins, Famagusta, Karpas beaches. Enjoyed a couple of nights in Girne Harbour. It is worth going there, but obviously it is more expensive and not even better than all the restaurants which are much closer to the villa. Our favourites were Silver Rocks, Sardunya Bay (you can watch beautiful sun set there), Ambience, Pasta Mania and of course Efendi in Girne with not cheap but one of the best meals we have ever had!! Also we can recommend a little cafe on Mare Monte beach with very good value for money, good food while enjoying your time on the beach! We had some other options for the holiday and North Cyprus was not our first choice but we are very happy that we went as it was one of the best holidays we ever had, we would definitely go back to villa Odessa!

We spent our wedding anniversary at Villa Odessa in October. At first were worried a bit about weather, but it was simply wonderful all way through– lots of sunshine, but not too hot ( 27-29C). The villa itself is simply beautiful, situated in a picturesque village at the foot of the mountain but high enough to have breathtaking seaside views ( the best we’ve ever seen!). We were also enjoying a pleasant breeze even on the hottest days, which helps a lot in a hot climate. The interior design is very stylish, yet comfortable – you have everything you can possibly need. The garden is amazing. The owner is very helpful and accessible. There are plenty of beaches along the main road. The closest beach is only about 5-7 minutes of drive from the villa. We spent most of our time on Mare Monte public beach, which was free of charge but not in any sense worse than the ones you have to pay for. Worth trying all of them anyway – they all have different views over seaside and mountains and are only 5-10YTL per person. There are plenty of restaurants and bars all along the road to Kyrenia, we tried some of them and were very pleased. One of the best is Stone Grill - wonderful cooking experience and great steaks! In ‘Sardunya Beach’ ( a little restaurant on the beach, only 6-8 min of driving from the villa) we enjoyed some really great but inexpensive meals. There is also a very good restaurant Green Palace in the village itself (only 12-15 min walk from the villa), in case you want to enjoy some drinks and don’t want to drive... In October there is traditional Olive Fest held in Kyrenia - we had the exciting experience of trying local food and even bought some fresh cold pressed olive oil to take home with us to prolong the taste of our vacation for a little bit longer! We had a great holiday and will definitely come back to this beautiful villa. Anna and Roman Pinkovsky. Kiev. Ukraine.

"Absolutely stunning holiday villa"
My wife and I stayed at Villa Odessa in May and we had a wonderful time. The villa is tastefully decorated to a high standard and had all that we could wish for and a beautiful pool and gardens as well. The location is very scenic with the magnificent mountains in the background and views out to sea from the front. You need a car but beach, restaurants and bars are just a short drive away. Highly recommended.

"A great two weeks."
We stayed at Villa Odessa between July 16th and July 31st, and had a wonderful time. Firstly I would like to thank Chris for all his help; from sending us extra photos (even after I had booked), to arranging transport and hire cars, he was always on hand, and made the whole process very easy, and run smoothly. The villa itself is stunning, sat in generous grounds, nestled in a quaint Turkish Village. The villa is approached up a short flight of stairs, and as the villa is sat in an elevated position, this provides plenty of privacy as you aren’t overlooked and knockout views of the coast and surrounding areas. The view from the upstairs balcony is one I won’t forget in a hurry. Inside the villa it is very well equipped with everything you need for your holiday, the living room is comfy, with ample seating and a TV and games console, which proved very handy for our 10 year old, when the mid day heat arrived and needed to take some shade; there is also an iPod dock, which I used frequently (just make sure you have the data roaming off, otherwise you might be in for a shock). The kitchen has all the pots and pans and utensils you need and there is also a cold water dispenser which is very handy. The freezer comes with plenty of ice trays, which if like me you like cold drinks, then these are a blessing. The bedrooms are very well equipped with comfortable beds, and nice furniture. A nice touch was the addition of a CD player in case you wanted to listen to some music whilst getting ready (not sure about Chris’s taste in music though). The pool area was gorgeous, the pool itself nice and clean and extremely refreshing, it is 3m deep at one end which is good for jumping in and out of. It’s also possible to open up the patio doors into the living room, so if someone is to stay inside looking for some shade, it doesn’t feel like they are too far away from the action. The sun loungers were plentiful, and very comfortable, a nice trick was to place one next to the parasol area at the back, the view of the mountains from there is spectacular and was a popular spot in the shade for an afternoon nap. As I said earlier the villa is set in a small Village, I believe pronounced Kar-shacka. It has two shops, one of which (not the co-op) we found great for basic supplies of fresh bread, pita’s and collecting ice creams in our freezer bag. You could also get crisps, pop, some meat, a basic selection of freezer food, and if your interested a semi-reasonable selection of alcohol. The village itself is nice and pleasant to stroll through on the way to the shop, and the locals are very friendly. We were lucky enough to witness a local wedding, which adds to villa experience. There is a restaurant called the Green Palace quite close by, roughly a 5-10 minute walk, which had a decent curry, kebab, and fillet steak, all at decent prices. I recommend hiring a car so you can get to the larger supermarkets, and sample the local cuisine, walking is out of the question, but this is normally the case all over North Cyprus. We only ate one evening meal in the villa, because I always find the food in North Cyrus to be amazing and quite cheap compared to the UK. We only went to Kyrenia once because it is roughly a 25-30 minute drive away. However we didn’t miss it, there are some truly great places within a 5-10 minute drive. I recommend going to Silver Rocks, its sat right beside sea, so you can watch the waves break on the rocks whilst enjoying your meal, the staff here were fantastic and the food great, you can even use there pool, and entry to the sea during the day for free. They also treated us to complimentary brandy, coffee and baileys after our meal. There is a Mezze place in Alsancak, which is fantastic, however do not go if you aren’t hungry, I have never seen so much food in my life and would recommend ordering for one less person than is eating. Ambiance is a chic, upmarket restaurant, sat by the sea. It is the most expensive place I have eaten at whilst being in North-Cyprus (but still not UK prices) I had to send my T-bone steak back, which was swapped for a lovely fillet. However, I would recommend giving it a try, because the fillet was very good. If I am being honest I preferred the atmosphere at Silver Rocks, and a free glass of brandy always goes a long way. If you’re missing England, there is a Chip shop called Cod-Baba, I have to say I didn’t want to go there, but it was fantastic, great chips, Beautiful fish and curry sauce! You can sit in or take away. Give it a try for a cheap relaxing night. There is also a quite decent pizza place called Yummies, made to look like an American Diner. We had a fantastic time, and I do highly recommend the villa. My only criticism is that two weeks wasn’t long enough. I think I will try three next time.
